America’s nuclear energy industry is in decline. Low natural gas prices, financing hurdles, failure to find a permanent repository for high-level nuclear waste, reactions to the Fukushima accident in Japan, and other factors are hastening the day when existing U.S. reactors become uneconomic. The decline of the U.S. nuclear energy industry could be much more rapid than policy makers and stakeholders anticipate.

The nuclear industry has quietly evolved over the past 30 years to become one of the safest and most reliable low-cost producers of electricity. Mary Jo Rogers's new book, Nuclear Energy Leadership: Lessons Learned from US Operators, provides helpful suggestions as well as useful tools drawn from the best of the nuclear industry. This timely book illustrates with convincing detail and relevant case studies how the lessons from the best nuclear operators can be applied to nonnuclear operations-based organizations to markedly improve production and safety performance. The author draws from a research database on nuclear leaders, supervisors, senior leadership teams and organizations, interviews with numerous nuclear leaders, as well as extensive personal experience assisting in nuclear power plant turnarounds. With increased pressure on cost of production for fossil generation and oil and gas, readers from the energy and utility industries would greatly benefit from the lessons learned by excellent nuclear operators.

For the first several thousand years of written history, humankind submitted to a variety of emperors, rulers, kings, czars, and dictators. While political empires are far less common today, this imperial leadership mindset is deeply ingrained in our collective psyche. Our workplaces remain filled with miniature Napoleons and Hirohitos wielding supreme power over their subordinates through Authoritarian, Totalitarian, Overbearing, and Micromanaging (ATOM) Leadership practices. While effective to an extent, emperors have never been able to unlock the full potential of their kingdoms. An empire will only survive until a weak leader assumes the throne, and the kingdom falls.Fortunately, World War II taught us a new way to defeat imperial, ATOM Leaders. The nuclear weapons that forced the Japanese empire to capitulate have changed everything we know about warfare, politics, and diplomacy. These weapons harness the power of the very atoms that make up the essence of our world. Similarly, defeating our workplace ATOM Leaders requires harnessing the power of an abundant natural resource: human ideas. Like the neutrons in an atomic bomb, the precise application of Nuclear Leadership enables an explosive chain reaction of ideas, the ultimate weapon for overthrowing a dictatorship. Twenty-First Century organizations achieve success by generating higher quality ideas with greater efficiency and in larger quantities than their competitors generate, but our natural ATOM Leadership tendencies hinder innovation. To split the ATOM, we need Nuclear Leaders who are fully aware of both their strengths and their limitations, and who maximize the talent of those around them. We need Nuclear Leaders who recognize the value of all team members in the chain reaction and take proactive steps to ensure their teammates feel respected and valued. And we need Nuclear Leaders who make their workplaces a safe, fun-loving space, while continuously offering opportunities for their teammates to grow. The philosophical shift resulting from splitting the ATOM enables ideas to ignite a chain reaction that not only shatters a company's barriers but also has the power to change the world.M. D. Omaha has spent over a decade in leadership positions charged with conducting Intercontinental Ballistic Missile operations. Under the cold Montana, Wyoming, and North Dakota ground, M. D. Omaha has meticulously prepared himself and others for a battle we hope never takes place. These moments of solitude and reflection have shaped his thoughts on leadership and led to one inescapable conclusion: to succeed in the modern era, organizations must overcome our natural ATOM tendencies and instead equip our teams to take a new approach to leadership--Nuclear Leadership.

The Hegemon S Tool Kit written by Rebecca Davis Gibbons and has been published by Cornell University Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2022-07-15 with Political Science categories.

At a moment when the nuclear nonproliferation regime is under duress, Rebecca Davis Gibbons provides a trenchant analysis of the international system that has, for more than fifty years, controlled the spread of these catastrophic weapons. The Hegemon's Tool Kit details how that regime works and how, disastrously, it might falter. In the early nuclear age, experts anticipated that all technologically-capable states would build these powerful devices. That did not happen. Widespread development of nuclear arms did not occur, in large part, because a global nuclear nonproliferation regime was created. By the late-1960s, the United States and the Soviet Union had drafted the Treaty on the Non-Proliferation of Nuclear Weapons (NPT), and across decades the regime has expanded, with more agreements and more nations participating. As a result, in 2022, only nine states possess nuclear weapons. Why do most states in the international system adhere to the nuclear nonproliferation regime? The answer lies, Gibbons asserts, in decades of painstaking efforts undertaken by the US government. As the most powerful state during the nuclear age, the United States had many tools with which to persuade other states to join or otherwise support nonproliferation agreements. The waning of US global influence, Gibbons shows in The Hegemon's Tool Kit, is a key threat to the nonproliferation regime. So, too, is the deepening global divide over progress on nuclear disarmament. To date, the Chinese government is not taking significant steps to support the nuclear nonproliferation regime, and as a result, the regime may face a harmful leadership gap.

The United States And Arms Control written by Allan Krass and has been published by Praeger this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 1997-08-30 with Political Science categories.

The United States has committed itself to an unprecedented number and variety of arms control and nonproliferation obligations in the past decade. At least ten major new agreements have been signed since 1986, and some of them have now been in force for several years. After a brief review of Cold War arms control and the lessons to be learned from it, the book surveys the commitments the United States has made during the past decade across the full spectrum of arms control, including nuclear, conventional, chemical, and biological weapons. It describes the bureaucratic structure the United States has created to implement its own commitments and to verify that other countries are complying with theirs. The book then analyzes the costs and benefits of the new regimes, the persistent problems encountered in managing them, and the causes and appropriate responses to incidents of noncompliance. It concludes with an argument for continued U.S. leadership in international arms control.

This provocative book argues that the United States is paying a high price for its dominance in the emergence of new chemical, biological, and nuclear threats. The Price of Dominance recommends an integrated program of strategy, policy, arms control negotiations, and nuclear deployments to foster the necessary cooperation while retaining strong nuclear deterrence as the foundation of American security strategy.
