Thesis (M.A.) from the year 2012 in the subject Communications - Multimedia, Internet, New Technologies, grade: A, The University of Liverpool, course: Information Management, language: English, abstract: Social network sites have millions of users worldwide with the sites integrated into the daily practices of the users with increasing numbers recorded among university students. Examples of popular social network sites used commonly by university students include Facebook, Bebo, MySpace, Cyworld and many others. The largest of the sites among university students being Facebook created in 2004 by Zuckerberg with its rate of usage at 90% (Stutzman, 2006). In addition, Facebook has stimulated a platform for a lot researches on its various aspects for instance in academics (Hewitt & Forte, 2006). Furthermore the growth of social network sites on schools can be attributed to the growth The intense usage of social network sites within academic institutions has resulted into social capital formation and on the other hand resulted to new platforms of effective communication. In addition, the social network sites are also associated with social capital measures for instance bonding and bridging of social capital. Furthermore, self esteem moderates the relationship between social capital and social network sites. Individuals who have low self esteem tend to gain confidence from using social network sites as compared with their counterparts who have high self-esteem. This aspect acts as a psychological boost to individuals specifically students who are introverts and can act as an academic boost for them. Studies conducted earlier on social network sites had data being collected at one-point-in-time thus making it difficult to determine a time order in relationships among users of the social network sites, social capital and self esteem. The growth of social network sites was not phenomenal and popular and thus the underlying reasons which attracted different segments could not be identified. The reports indicated that studies on impacts of SNSs among heavy users like university students need to be conducted since friendship maintenance using social network sites play a significant role in individual psychological development of students. The age group 18 to 25 represents the period between adulthood and adolescence according to Arnett (2000). This stage, as argued by Arnett, is vital to an individual adulthood development since during this period when a person develops social skills like for career orientation, relationship maintenance and self dependency.

Sense of belonging is an important outcome of participation in a social network that has been shown to be correlated with several indicators of psychological well-being (Hagerty, Williams, Coyne, & Early, 1996). Sense of belonging encompasses two dimensions: fit and valued involvement (Hagerty, Lynch-Sauer, Patusky, Bouwsema, & Collier, 1992). These dimensions have been shown to be important to the well being of a variety of populations, particularly college students (Hagerty et al., 1992). While several studies have demonstrated the relationship between an individual's participation in general forms of social networks (i.e., face-to-face interactions with members of one's social network) and their sense of belonging, few studies have examined whether individuals can achieve a greater sense of belonging through the use of computer-mediated forms of social networking, such as social networking websites. Because college students make up a large percentage of social networking site users, and because sense of belonging has been shown to be especially important to college students at their stage of development, the present study examined the relationship between college students' use of social networking sites and their sense of belonging. To explore this relationship, 141 undergraduate students at the University of Hartford in West Hartford, Connecticut, completed self-report questionnaires regarding their participation in face-to-face interactions with friends, internet use, social networking site use, and their sense of belonging. According to the results, nearly all students (98.6%) reported having a Facebook account, and 93.6% of students ranked Facebook as their favorite social networking site. Results also revealed that students' sense of belonging was positively correlated with both the number of hours per day in which students reported using social networking sites and with the total number of friends students reported having on social networking sites. Interestingly, the relationship between number of friends on social networking sites and sense of belonging was found to be stronger for male students than for female students. These findings suggest that the use of social networking sites may benefit college students by increasing their sense of belonging. Most importantly, this study contributes to the small, but growing, research regarding participation in social networking sites.

In the era of such online spaces as Facebook, Instant Messenger, Live Journal, Blogger, Web Shots, and campus blogs, college students are using these resources and other online sites as a social medium. Inevitably, this medium presents students with ethical decisions about social propriety, self disclosure and acceptable behaviour. Because online social networking sites have proven problematic for college students and for college administrators, this book aims to offer professional guidance to Higher Education administrators and policy makers. Online Social Networking on Campus: Understanding what matters in student culture is a professional guide for Higher Education faculty and Student Affairs administrators, which rigorously examines college students’ use of online social networking sites and how they use these to develop relationships both on and off campus. Most importantly, Online Social Networking on Campus investigates how college students use online sites to explore and makes sense of their identities. Providing information taken from interviews, surveys and focus group data, the book presents an ethnographic view of social networking that will help Student Affairs administrators, Information Technology administrators, and faculty better understand and provide guidance to the "neomillennials" on their campuses.

Academic Paper in the subject Library Science, Information- / Documentation Science, , language: English, abstract: This study investigates the influence of social networking sites on information service delivery to students of Asom Bur library of university of Mkar. Five objectives and five research question guided the study. The descriptive survey research was adopted for the study. A total of 958 registered users of Ason Bur learning resource center (library) of university of Mkar constituted the population of the study. A sample size of one hundred and sixty (160) students were randomly selected from the entire population of the study using proportionate random sampling technique. A self-developed questionnaire was used to obtain information. Data collected were analyzed using mean scored and standard deviation. Finding revealed that, high percentage (50%) of the students mainly use social networking sites for social activities, only 20% percentage of the population use social networking sites for education. Findings further revealed that to benefit the rich potentials of social networking sites, students should spend less time socializing on them and utilize them for more for school-related activities and worthwhile events. It was also recommended that the university management through the library should encourage the students in the use of other social networking sites like Skype, LinkedIn, MySpace, Google Classroom and Zoom Meeting so that their knowledge will be widened, students should include the use of Google Classroom to the list of social networking sites they explore to reap its benefits. Though students use social networking sites frequently (daily and weekly), care must be taken to avoid them from using them when lectures are ongoing. This will help to curb the extent to which students are distracted during lecture periods. The university library through the library should encourage other methods of service delivered to student such e-books, posting photos, videos, voice over protocol and others. Also, the University management through the library should ensure the provision of basic information needed by academic community, faster and effective information service delivery, independent and life-long learning and provision of information necessary to improve quality of teaching.
