This study aims to evaluate the applicability of the vegetation index NDVI to assist in inventory of biomass stocks in natural forests. For this, we used the information obtained in the study of case project, entitled u201cForest Restoration and Carbon Credits AES Tietu00ea S/Au201d. Different sampling procedures commonly used in forest inventories were applied, looking to compare them in terms of accuracy and conservativeness of the estimates of biomass and carbon. The vegetation index NDVI show good correlation with the measured biomass in the field inventory plots. As result, this index can be applied as support decision tool to define the strata in the stratified random sampling as well as a predictor variable of the regression estimator in the double sampling procedure. This latter procedure was able to minimize the uncertainty of estimates, using a reduced sampling effort. It makes the approach very interesting in the context of biomass and carbon surveys applied to natural and restored Atlantic forests. It is because those studies are often applied in large areas, where the field works are time consuming and very expensive.

This report is the second in a series that examines the role of natural forests and woodlands in the storage of carbon. Understanding the role of natural ecosystems in carbon storage is an important part of solving the climate change problem. This report presents a landscape-wide green carbon account of the `Great Western Woodlands¿ (GWW), sixteen million hectares of mostly contiguous natural woody vegetation to the east of the wheatbelt in south-western Western Australia. For the first time, we provide an overview of the vegetation structure, climate, geology and historical land use of the GWW, and examine how these interact to affect the carbon dynamics of this region¿s landscape ecosystems. An analysis of time-series of satellite imagery is used to develop a fire history of the GWW since the 1970s. These layers of environmental information, along with field survey data and remotely sensed greenness, are used to construct a spatial model to estimate biomass carbon stocks of the woodlands at the present day, and to infer an upper limit to the carbon sequestration potential of the GWW. A range of management options to enable protection of high quality carbon stocks and restoration of degraded stocks are evaluated.

The loss of ecosystem services due to deforestation is of global concern. Financial mechanisms such as REDD+ (reducing emissions from deforestation and forest degradation) have been proposed as ways to support the conservation of tropical forests. Crucial steps in the implementation of REDD+ are to estimate national-level carbon emissions from deforestation and forest degradation and to collect data on local biomass and carbon stocks. In this research, above-ground biomass (AGB) values and associated carbon stocks in a lowland secondary forest are estimated and compared with those in an adjacent primary forest, both growing on limestone in Seram, the Moluccas, Indonesia.

Measurement Guidelines For The Sequestration Of Forest Carbon written by Timothy R. H. Pearson and has been published by this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2007 with Carbon sequestration categories.

Measurement guidelines for forest carbon sequestration were developed to support reporting by public and private entities to greenhouse gas registries. These guidelines are intended to be a reference for designing a forest carbon inventory and monitoring system by professionals with a knowledge of sampling, statistical estimation, and forest measurements. This report provides guidance on defining boundaries; measuring, monitoring, and estimating changes in carbon stocks; implementing plans to measure and monitor carbon; and developing quality assurance and quality control plans to ensure credible and reproducible estimates of the carbon credits.

Forest Inventory Based Estimation Of Carbon Stocks And Flux In California Forests In 1990 written by Jeremy Steven Fried and has been published by this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2008 with Carbon sequestration categories.

Estimates of forest carbon stores and flux for California circa 1990 were modeled from forest inventory data in support of California's legislatively mandated greenhouse gas inventory. Reliable estimates of live-tree carbon stores and flux on timberlands outside of national forest could be calculated from periodic inventory data collected in the 1980s and 1990s; however, estimation of circa 1990 flux on national forests and forests other than timberland was problematic owing to a combination of changing inventory protocols and definitions and the lack of remeasurement data on those land categories. We estimate annual carbon flux on the 7.97 million acres of timberlands outside of national forests (which account for 24 percent of California's forest area and 28 percent of its live tree aboveground biomass) at 2.9 terragrams per year.
