Following a major earthquake, one of Caltrans' most critical tasks is to assess the condition of all potentially impacted bridges and roadway corridors in the state highway system. Timely response is important to ensure public safety, guide emergency vehicle traffic, and re-establish critical lifeline routes. In the past, bridge inspection teams had difficulties setting priorities immediately following an earthquake, because they lacked precise information about where the worst shaking and, most likely, the greatest damage had occurred. In 2005 Caltrans initiated a contract with the United States Geological Survey (USGS) to develop and implement a Caltrans-specific version of their ShakeCast system, a post-event software analysis tool that was anticipated to change the way Caltrans responds following a major earthquake. ShakeCast is a web-based application that automatically retrieves measured earthquake shaking data, analyzes it against individual bridge performance characteristics, and generates inspection prioritization emails and other web-based products for emergency responders within minutes of an event. Benefits have already been realized over the course of the test deployment phase. The ShakeCast system has proved to be a valuable tool for post-earthquake response for Caltrans during real events as well as for scenario planning exercises.

The conference was organized by the Macedonian Association for Earthquake Engineering (MAEE), under the auspices of European Association for Earthquake Engineering (EAEE). The book is organized in twenty one state-of-the-art papers written by carefully selected very eminent researchers mainly from Europe but also from USA and Japan. The contributions provide a very comprehensive collection of topics on earthquake engineering, as well as interdisciplinary subjects such as engineering seismology and seismic risk assessment and management. Engineering seismology, geotechnical earthquake engineering, seismic performance of buildings, earthquake resistant engineering structures, new techniques and technologies and managing risk in seismic regions are all among the different topics covered in this book. The book also includes the First Ambraseys Distinguished Award Lecture given by Prof. Theo P. Tassios in the honor of Prof. Nicholas N. Ambraseys. The aim is to present the current state of knowledge and engineering practice, addressing recent and ongoing developments while also projecting innovative ideas for future research and development. It is not always possible to have so many selected manuscripts within the broad spectrum of earthquake engineering thus the book is unique in one sense and may serve as a good reference book for researchers in this field. Audience: This book will be of interest to civil engineers in the fields of geotechnical and structural earthquake engineering; scientists and researchers in the fields of seismology, geology and geophysics. Not only scientists, engineers and students, but also those interested in earthquake hazard assessment and mitigation will find in this book the most recent advances.

Post Earthquake Assessment Of Nevada Bridges Using Shakemap Shakecast written by Mohammed Saeed Mohammed and has been published by this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2016 with Bridges categories.

Post-earthquake capacity of Nevada highway bridges is examined through a combination of engineering study and scenario earthquake evaluation. The study was undertaken by the University of Nevada Reno Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering with the collaboration of the Nevada Seismological Laboratory under project funding from the Nevada Department of Transportation, with technical engagement through the NDOT Bridge Division. The vulnerability of Nevada bridges relative to earthquake hazard is evaluated using two different methods. First, a distributed set of 112 realistic earthquake scenarios were processed with USGS program ShakeMap, and USGS program ShakeCast was used to extract site-specific ground motion levels for the 1,831 Nevada bridges in the Federal Highway Administration National Bridge Inventory. Second, using hazard curves underlying the 2014 USGS National Seismic Hazard Map (NSHM), return periods for earthquakes causing extensive damage to bridges were extracted and compared to the 1000-year design level adopted by the AASHTO. Revised capacity values were proposed in consultation with NDOT engineers using a combination of literature review, Nevada bridge plans, and Nevada bridge design spectra. The two evaluation approaches provide complimentary views of bridge approach. Additionally a damage assessment and repair manual has been developed. The manual describes the typical damage that would be observed as a result of an earthquake and then describes methods for repairing the damage.

"The National Earthquake Information Center (NEIC) has been operating since 1966, and throughout its history has been recognized as a world leader for earthquake information. Since 2006, the NEIC has operated on a 24-hour, 7-days per week (24/7) basis, and reports on about 30,000 earthquakes per year. Further, NEIC produces a suite of real-time situational awareness products, including ShakeMap, ShakeCast, Did-You-Feel-It? (DYFI?), and Prompt Assessment of Global Earthquakes for Response (PAGER), to characterize the shaking resulting from the earthquake and the impact it is likely to have on nearby populations and infrastructure. All of these products are ultimately archived in the ANSS Comprehensive Catalog (ComCat), hosted and served by the NEIC. The NEIC also pursues an active research program to improve its ability to characterize earthquakes and understand their hazards. These efforts are all aimed at mitigating the risks of earthquakes to humankind. The NEIC must continue to evolve, concurrently improving its operations and 24/7 robustness, streamlining services and infrastructure, and keeping pace with research and innovation in the field of seismology. This document outlines how the NEIC might best achieve such goals, by describing specific avenues and opportunities for development in the next five years (2019-23)"--
