Packed with up-to-date examples from real-life schools, this is an invaluable guide to how supervision can help teachers and other staff to feel safe, happy and challenged in their work, and to more effectively safeguard the children and young people in their care. As a universal service, education is expected to safeguard and meet the needs of all pupils, some of whom may have complex issues, and also to offer emotional support for children and their families. There are increasing pressures and changes facing schools and teachers, accelerated by the impact of the pandemic; however, unlike other stressful professions, there is no accepted framework for supporting school staff to deal with the personal and emotional rigours of their role. Supervision offers a solution - an effective method of supporting staff with safeguarding, and with the broader emotional demands of their work. Based on direct experience and presenting an Integrated Model of Supervision (IMS), this book offers guidance for instigating supervision in school settings. The Second Edition is revised throughout, with three new chapters and all chapters updated to incorporate contemporary examples.

Does fear or trust dominate relationships in your school's classrooms? How well do supervisors listen to and respond to teachers? How well do teachers listen to and respond to students? How are problems identified and solved? Supportive Supervision in Schools is a guide for teachers and administrators who want to create good school climates and a school culture that encourages professional growth and development among staff members. It uses a conferencing method to allow teachers, administrators, and students to discuss and reflect upon what they are doing inside the school building. Old ideas about leadership models have not been supported by empirical research and have not influenced the way school leaders and teachers do their work. This book points to specific skill areas that need attention. It specifies that the creation of supportive environments occurs in weekly individual and group conferences. The authors stress the importance of listening and speaking so that messages are not distorted or misunderstood and emphasize trust-building. Using actual examples, this work shows how to construct supportive environments and how to identify and resolve problems.

What does supervision mean in a school setting? How can supervision benefit staff and student wellbeing? How can I best run supervision sessions? Supervision is an effective way to support staff in navigating the complex experiences of simultaneously teaching and safeguarding children, but much of the existing literature on supervision can't easily be applied to school settings. Bringing together theory and practice, this practical how-to guide includes chapters on why supervision is so important for staff and student wellbeing, what qualities make for an ideal supervisor, how to adapt supervision for in-person and online settings, as well as criteria for an optimum supervision environment and suggested material to include in supervision sessions.

A highly respected overview of the field of instructional supervision that covers the three domains of supervision: instructional development, curriculum development, and staff development. The authors adhere to the beliefs that supervisors should look at teaching before looking at the teacher, and that the supervisor should look at the classroom and school environment within the context of instruction. Continuing in approach and philosophy as previous editions, the Eighth Edition will continue to lean toward practice, with heavy emphasis on the supervisor's responsibilities as an instructor.

Several years of research support a differentiated system of supervision in which teachers can choose from among four different supervision styles. With the clinical style, intense observation and feedback is conducted by a trained supervisor. Cooperative professional development consists of small teams of peers working together for their mutual growth. With self-directed development, the individual teacher assumes primary responsibility for his or her own growth. Administrative monitoring is a process by which the administrator conducts brief drop-in visits and conferences. Although research indicates that the differentiated system is feasible and has a positive effect on those who participate, it will not be effective in all schools or with all teachers. An implementation process that has been found to be generally effective is presented, but each school is encouraged to develop its own version of the system, after teachers, supervisors, and administrators have had an opportunity to discuss ideas and their own needs. The first edition of this book, titled A DESIGN FOR INSTRUCTIONAL SUPERVISION, provided a structural framework for an effective program of instructional supervision. The basic cognitive thrust of this second edition, SUPERVISION: A Guide to Instructional Leadership, remains the same as the first. What has changed is the attention to the detail surrounding the design components. References have been updated and streamlined, activities have been modified, and examples of structure have been created using the current national policy situation as a base. Philosophical and historical definitions of supervision are maintained and expanded in this edition. It will help professionals with responsibilities for instructional leadership design a supervisory program that fits a local situation by taking advantage of the foundation provided herein. Attention is given to the selection of and the interrelationships between those assumptions, principles, objectives, criteria, and procedures so that planners of supervisory programs will gain the knowledge and tools necessary to create that structure from this book. It also provides a means for schools to have a well-conceived, carefully designed, properly implemented, and continuously evaluated plan for the supervision of instruction in order to reply competently to state and federally mandated assessments for students. In addition, personal perspectives of the authors are presented in each part of the text. The book will serve as a guide and provide direction to instructional supervisors, directors of services, principals, administrators at all levels, teachers, grade level or department chairs, and others interested in the management of instruction in the school setting.

This supervisory, administrative, and leadership text for courses at the graduate level reflects new thinking about teaching and school structures - redefining the idea of supervision to focus on seeing schools as communities rather than as organizations. In addition, Supervision emphasizes the student-teacher relationship rather than bureaucratic functions. Using new opinions based on current trends in education, the fifth edition takes the position of viewing the school as a community, with teaching and learning as the most important aspects of this community. In addition, the school is looked upon as a moral rather than a technical enterprise, whereby the moral authority of the supervisor, and its close link with the moral authority of the teacher, is emphasized. The simplified chapters and the revised arrangement of material provide a more logical sequence and presentation of the subject.
