The Navstar Global Positioning System (GPS), although primarily designed for three dimensional position and velocity determination, is uniquely capable of providing highly accurate and stable timing information to users. This capability is derived from the time dejay pseudo ranging concept which farms the basis for GPS navigation. The combination of navigation and timing together in one system will make GPS the Precise Time and Time Interval (PTTI) source of choice for the forseeable future. Only GPS can supply continuous timing data world wide, in any weather, to a dynamically moving user at a previously unsurveyed site, with submicrosecond accuracy traceable to an established reference. This paper discusses the application of Navstar GPS to the problems of PTTI dissemination. A short review of the GPS concept leads to a detailed description of the implementation of time transfer through Navstar GPS. Time is followed from the U.S. Naval Observatory (USNO) through the ground control, satellite, and receiving segments of GPS to the user's clock system. The three options by which a user's system can receive from the GPS receivers, currently under development by the DOD, are defined in detail. The electrical/digital/mechanical interface parameters along with suggested methods for their use are outlined for each option. A detailed error model is also presented for the traceability of UTG (GPS) to UTC (USNO). Although absolute accuracy of UTC (GPS) provided to a user is specified to be slightly over 100 nanoseconds rms, substantially better accuracies can be easily achieved. By understanding and working around some of the GPS error uncertainties, real time synchronization between stationary users on the same continent can be controlled to within a few nanoseconds, and absolute post processed time offset with UTC (USNO) measured within 25 nanoseconds or better.

The American WestÑwhere such landmarks as the Golden Gate Bridge rival wild landscapes in popularity and iconic significanceÑhas been viewed as a frontier of technological innovation. Where Minds and Matters Meet calls attention to the convergence of Western history and the history of technology, showing that the regionÕs politics and culture have shaped seemingly placeless, global technological practices and institutions. Drawing on political and social history as well as art history, the bookÕs essays take the cultural measure of the regionÕs great technological milestones, including San DiegoÕs Panama-California Exposition, the building of the Hetch Hetchy Dam in the Sierras, and traffic planning in Los Angeles. Covers the latest developments in PNT technologies, including integrated satellite navigation, sensor systems, and civil applications Featuring sixty-four chapters that are divided into six parts, this two-volume work provides comprehensive coverage of the state-of-the-art in satellite-based position, navigation, and timing (PNT) technologies and civilian applications. It also examines alternative navigation technologies based on other signals-of-opportunity and sensors and offers a comprehensive treatment on integrated PNT systems for consumer and commercial applications. Volume 1 of Position, Navigation, and Timing Technologies in the 21st Century: Integrated Satellite Navigation, Sensor Systems, and Civil Applications contains three parts and focuses on the satellite navigation systems, technologies, and engineering and scientific applications. It starts with a historical perspective of GPS development and other related PNT development. Current global and regional navigation satellite systems (GNSS and RNSS), their inter-operability, signal quality monitoring, satellite orbit and time synchronization, and ground- and satellite-based augmentation systems are examined. Recent progresses in satellite navigation receiver technologies and challenges for operations in multipath-rich urban environment, in handling spoofing and interference, and in ensuring PNT integrity are addressed. A section on satellite navigation for engineering and scientific applications finishes off the volume. Volume 2 of Position, Navigation, and Timing Technologies in the 21st Century: Integrated Satellite Navigation, Sensor Systems, and Civil Applications consists of three parts and addresses PNT using alternative signals and sensors and integrated PNT technologies for consumer and commercial applications. It looks at PNT using various radio signals-of-opportunity, atomic clock, optical, laser, magnetic field, celestial, MEMS and inertial sensors, as well as the concept of navigation from Low-Earth Orbiting (LEO) satellites. GNSS-INS integration, neuroscience of navigation, and animal navigation are also covered. The volume finishes off with a collection of work on contemporary PNT applications such as survey and mobile mapping, precision agriculture, wearable systems, automated driving, train control, commercial unmanned aircraft systems, aviation, and navigation in the unique Arctic environment. In addition, this text: Serves as a complete reference and handbook for professionals and students interested in the broad range of PNT subjects Includes chapters that focus on the latest developments in GNSS and other navigation sensors, techniques, and applications Illustrates interconnecting relationships between various types of technologies in order to assure more protected, tough, and accurate PNT Position, Navigation, and Timing Technologies in the 21st Century: Integrated Satellite Navigation, Sensor Systems, and Civil Applications will appeal to all industry professionals, researchers, and academics involved with the science, engineering, and applications of position, navigation, and timing technologies. pnt21book.com

Since the publication of the bestselling second edition of The Global Positioning System and GIS, the use of GPS as an input for GIS has evolved from a supporting analysis tool to become an essential part of real-time management tools in wide-ranging fields. Continued technological advances and decreased costs have altered the GPS vendor landscape significantly and opened the door to an array of receiver and software options. Retaining the in-depth description that made the previous edition so popular, The Global Positioning System and ArcGIS, Third Edition has expanded its coverage to review the capabilities and features common to most receivers. While it emphasizes Trimble and Magellan hardware and Trimble TerraSync and ESRI ArcPad software to capture data, the text’s broadened coverage makes it useful with virtually any hardware/software packages, so readers will be able to collect GPS data and install it in ArcGIS—regardless of the data capture mechanism. Covering the latest developments in this emerging field, the third edition has been updated to include: New information on automated data collection Updates to the conversion of GPS data into GIS form with ArcGIS Desktop (v. 9.3) as well as ESRI software An examination of differential correction and improvements in accuracy of collected data Additional emphasis on ArcMap and Pathfinder Office Illustrations using ArcMap to combine GPS data with other data sets including raster DRGs, DOQs, DEMs, and various vector data sets Using a top-down approach, each chapter begins with a theoretical overview followed by self-study exercises and projects that provide step-by-step guidance on applying the concepts using GPS hardware or a PC. The text includes downloadable resources with GPS data sets for exercises in Trimble SSF and ESRI shapefile formats, plus other valuable learning resources. Solutions manual available upon qualified course adoption
