En aquest volum, que forma part de la col·lecció «Informes de l’Institut», es recullen les aportacions a les sessions de diàleg sobre els usos socials del català. Aquestes sessions varen tenir lloc a l’Institut d’Estudis Catalans els mesos de novembre i desembre del 2022 amb participació de membres de totes les seccions. És per això que els punts de vista des dels quals s’enfoquen els usos del català són la sociolingüística, la filologia, la transmissió de la ciència, les aplicacions tecnològiques i, en definitiva, tots els que tenen a veure amb la cultura i el coneixement. La subordinació lingüística i la fragmentació de la comunitat de parlants del català són problemes que es posen en relleu en aquest volum, si bé també s’hi exposen els fruits que han donat en la història recent els esforços perquè el català sigui present en l’àmbit de la comunicació mundial per mitjans informàtics i els beneficis econòmics i socials que va suposar la incorporació de la llengua catalana al sistema educatiu. La presència del català en l’àmbit de la justícia, la sanitat, la comunicació general i la comunicació de la ciència són també objectes d’estudi d’aquest volum.

L’interès públic per la cohesió social ha anat guanyant importància a mesura que s’ha anat observant l’avenç recent i global dels processos de segmentació comunicativa, de polarització ideològica o de desigualtat econòmica, entre d’altres. Particularment, a Catalunya s’hi ha afegit la preocupació per l’ús polític que s’ha fet sobre una suposada fragmentació de la societat catalana arran de la creixent demanda sobiranista. És per totes aquestes raons que la Secció de Filosofia i Ciències Socials de l’Institut d’Estudis Catalans va considerar oportú promoure l’elaboració d’un informe a càrrec d’alguns dels seus membres —amb la col·laboració d’altres investigadors— per tal que s’estudiés quina havia estat l’evolució d’aquesta cohesió en els primers vint anys del segle xxi a Catalunya. El principal objectiu d’aquest informe és afavorir un debat social aprofundit, sense apriorismes i a partir de les millors dades disponibles sobre la cohesió, a més d’oferir una àmplia diversitat de perspectives per aproximar-se a un terreny tan complex com aquest. L’informe que ara es publica presenta una síntesi dels treballs duts a terme per cadascun dels autors, la versió completa dels quals es pot consultar a http://cohesio-social.iec.cat. Tanmateix, és una obvietat que l’informe no ha pogut considerar l’impacte de la pandèmia de la COVID-19 en la cohesió social del país, un fet que haurà de merèixer una nova i especial atenció de la comunitat científica.

Located in north eastern Spain, Catalonia has long displayed the attributes of a nation: distinct language and culture, separate social and political institutions, and a strong collective identity. At the same time, it is one of Spain's centres of economic dynamism and innovation. As such, it is an especially striking instance of what has come to be known as 'minority' or 'internal' nations within a larger political order. Even after the Franco dictatorship's systematic suppression of Catalan language and culture, the idea that the Catalan nation needed to have an independent state of its own remained at the margins of Catalan politics. Yet, in recent years Catalan independence has become: the formal objective of Catalonia's nationalist parties; the focus of a strongly mobilized social movement; and the primary option of as much as half of Catalonia's electorate. This drive to independence even led to a failed unilateral declaration of independence. How can this remarkable transformation best be explained and what does it portend for the future of Catalonia and Spain? This new edition seeks to answer these questions. At the same time, the book analyzes the proposal for an independent Catalan state while also showing how the Catalan question might be resolved within Spain, by creating a multinational federation. It also explains why there is little prospect of either project coming to pass. The book demonstrates the dangers and contradictions of a state nationalism that denies the very existence of internal nations, while also exploring the terms under which such nations can be accommodated within a larger political order. On this basis, it addresses a critical challenge to the political institutions of much of Europe and North America.

The aim of the work Catalan Sociolinguistics. State of the Art and Future Challenges is to give an account, in a summary way, of the major topics dealt with by the study of the relation between language and society in the Catalan language community, and the extent to which international approaches have been received and how they have been adapted to the Catalan domain. Every tradition has interpreted this interaction with specific approaches. The Catalan tradition, for example, has opted for a vision that integrates a wide range of studies on different themes (economy, law, political science, communication, ecology, linguistic variation, anthropology, and so on). This unique critical sociolinguistic ethnography explores alternative migrant-regulated institutions of resistance and subversive communication technology: the locutorios or ethnic call shops. These migrant-owned businesses act as a window into their multimodal and hybrid linguistic and communicative practices, and into their own linguistic hierarchies and non-mainstream sociolinguistic orders. Here, socially displaced but technologically empowered transnational migrant populations actively find subversive ways to access information and communication technologies. As such they mobilise their own resources to successfully inhabit Catalonia, at the margins of powerful institutions. The book also focuses on the (internal) social organisation dynamics, as well as on the simultaneous fight against, and re-production of, practices and processes of social difference and social inequality among migrants themselves.
