Hvad er en utopi? Under hvilke omstændigheder opstår den? Hvilke forskellige funktioner har utopien? Disse og andre spørgsmål besvares i denne bog. I første del behandles utopien i almindelighed, uden hensyn til forskellene mellem utopierne. Der vises, hvordan utopien er et forsøg på at løse en social konflikt ved at konstruere en samfundsvision, hvor konflikten er ophørt med at eksistere. Først i anden del behandles de forskellige typer utopi – utopien som dagdrøm, som idealisering og som alternativ. Der gøres også rede for den krise som utopien kom i, da Marx, Engels og Lenin rettede deres kritik mod utopien som den uvidenskabelige forløber for marxismen. Men selv om utopien truede med at gå under, så er der, også inden for marxismens rækker, opstået en ny type utopi, som ikke vover at sige sit eget navn og som derfor kun viser sig indirekte. I tredje del behandles denne ’integrerede utopi’ nærmere. Det vises, hvordan det kan være en utopi til stede i teorier om menneskets arbejde og dets samvær med andre, i Techne og Eros. Både Eros og Techne kan være udtrykssteder for en utopi. Samtidig tilbagevises teorierne om, at menneskers arbejde og samvær uundgåeligt vil være udtryk for aggression og destruktion. I forbindelse med hovedtemaet er der i Utopisk dialektik analyser af Haugs vareæstetik, af Sohn-Rethels teori om forbindelsen mellem vareform og tankeform, af Goux’ numismatik, af Browns anarkistiske psykoanalyse, af Marcuses, Freuds og Marx’ arbejdsteorier. Bogen forsøger ud fra begrebet utopi at forstå en række teorier om forholdet mellem individ og samfund.

The assumption underlying this book is that we are facing a societal transformation, a “silent revolution” in fact, with consequences at least as far reaching as those of the Industrial Revolution. The author of this book wants to intervene in the current discussion about this revolution, a discussion which is normally colored by a resigned determinism maintaining that the transformation will come about all by itself as an automatic consequence of the development of technology.
