De afwezigheid van vrouwen bij activiteiten van genootschappen was aanvankelijk zo vanzelfsprekend dat de reglementen geen melding maken van het uitsluiten of toelaten van vrouwen. In de achttiende eeuw kwam hierin verandering. Dichtgenootschappen nodigden getalenteerde vruwen uit lid te worden. Zeeuwse vrouwen richtten een natuurkundig genootschap op, waar zij lessin in de natuurwetenschappen volgden. Toch was het voor vrouwen niet makkelijk om lid te worden van formele genootschappen, onder meer door de toelatingseisen en het gevraagde lidgeld. Verder wordt de positie van de Nederlandse vrouwen vergeleken met die van hun seksegenoten in Groot-Brittannië, Frankrijk en Duitsland.

Passion and Control explores Dutch architectural culture of the eighteenth century, revealing the central importance of architecture to society in this period and redefining long-established paradigms of early modern architectural history. Architecture was a passion for many of the men and women in this book; wealthy patrons, burgomasters, princes and scientists were all in turn infected with architectural mania. It was a passion shared with artists, architects and builders, and a vast cast of Dutch society who contributed to a complex web of architectural discourse and who influenced building practice. The decades around 1800 constitute the seminal period of European nationalism. The linguistic corollary of this was the rise of standard language ideology, from Finland to Spain, and from Iceland to the Habsburg Empire. Amidst these international events, the case of Dutch in the Netherlands offers a unique example. After the rise of the ideology from the 1750s onwards, the new discourse of one language–one nation was swiftly transformed into concrete top-down policies aimed at the dissemination of the newly devised standard language across the entire population of the newly established Dutch nation-state. Thus, the Dutch case offers an exciting perspective on the concomitant rise of cultural nationalism, national language planning and standard language ideology. This study offers a comprehensive yet detailed analysis of these phenomena by focussing on the ideology underpinning the new language policy, the institutionalisation of this ideology in metalinguistic discourse, the implementation of the policy in education, and the effects of the policy on actual language use.

Rutger Jan Schimmelpenninck was in de jaren 1798-1805 ambassadeur in Frankrijk, met een korte onderbreking in Engeland. Hij ontwikkelde zich al snel tot een diplomaat van wereldformaat in de hoge Parijse hofkringen rondom Napoleon Bonaparte, en in het voorjaar van 1805 plaatste de Franse keizer hem aan het hoofd van de Bataafse Republiek. Schimmelpennincks ambitieuze vrouw Catharina was een belangrijke drijvende kracht achter zijn politieke succes, maar dat wekte ook argwaan. Schimmelpenninck was zijn politieke loopbaan begonnen als advocaat en 'partij-ideoloog' van de patriotten, die in de jaren 1780-1787 in verzet kwamen tegen stadhouder Willem v, een voorvader van koning Willem-Alexander. Ze eisten een democratisch bestuur. Acht jaar later, tijdens de zogeheten Bataafse Revolutie, grepen de patriotse burgers de macht met militaire steun van de Fransen. Schimmelpenninck verrichtte tijdens die revolutie baanbrekend werk als medeoprichter van de Nationale Vergadering, het eerste democratisch gekozen parlement van Nederland. Na zijn promotie tot staatshoofd van Nederland in 1805 ontstond de verdenking dat feitelijk Catharina vanuit Huis ten Bosch de lakens uitdeelde, omdat Schimmelpenninck in toenemende mate leed aan een ongeneeslijke oogziekte. Een internationale roddelcampagne, aangestuurd door jaloerse Nederlandse diplomaten, leidde mede tot zijn val.
