Translated into English for the first time, Andrés Avelino de Orihuela’s El Sol de Jesús del Monte is a landmark Cuban antislavery novel. Published originally in 1852, the same year as Harriet Beecher Stowe’s Uncle Tom’s Cabin (which Orihuela had translated into Spanish), it provides an uncompromising critique of discourses of white superiority and an endorsement of equality for free people of color. Despite its historical and literary value, The Sun of Jesús del Monte is a long-neglected text, languishing for 150 years until its republication in 2008 in the original Spanish. The Sun of Jesús del Monte is the only Cuban novel of its time to focus on La Escalera, or the Ladder Rebellion, a major anticolonial and slave insurrection of nineteenth-century Cuba that shook the world’s wealthiest colony in 1843–44. It is also the only Cuban novel of its time to take direct aim at white privilege and unsparingly denounce the oppression of free people of color that intensified after the insurrection. Joan B. Pastor Aicart (Beneixama, 1849-1917) va ser metge rural i un escriptor molt prolífic, tant en castellà com en valencià. Si bé ha estat conegut com a poeta, la seua obra abraça tot tipus de gèneres literaris: assaig, teatre, articles de premsa, crítica literària, narrativa curta, etc. Fins ara, la seua figura ha passat desapercebuda dins del moviment de la Renaixença valenciana, tot i ser l'autor més premiat al llarg dels territoris de parla catalana durant aquells anys de renaixement lingüístic. El caràcter conservador i religiós d'una bona part de la seua obra i el seu tarannà social discret, que el va fer viure lluny de la capital i sempre més atent al treball que no a l'aparició en els cenacles literaris de l'època, han mantingut probablement oculta la importància dels seus escrits. Aquest llibre, que intenta ser una reconstrucció de la seua biografia intel·lectual, presenta també una breu selecció dels seus textos més rellevants.

Employing a wide variety of visual and literary sources (prints, the illustrated press, advertisements, theatrical representations, cinema and TV), thirteen essays explore an array of historical subjects concerning the critical reception of projects, buildings and cities through the means of caricature and parody. Subjects range from 1750 to the present, and from Europe and the USA to contemporary China. From William Hogarth and George Cruikshank to Osbert Lancaster, Adolf Loos' satire, and Saul Steinberg's celebrated cartoons of New York City, graphic and descriptive humour is shown to be an enormously fruitful, yet largely unexplored terrain of investigation for the architectural and urban historian.
