Volume 2 of the first available biography of this great African-American classical actor, covering his emergence as a professional actor in Britain during the years 1833-1852. Ira Aldridge: The Vagabond Years, 1833-1852 deals in depth with the later experiences of one of the modern world's first black classical actors as he toured throughout the United Kingdom impressing audiences with his virtuosity and versatility as an interpreter not only of tragic and comic black roles but also eventually as an actor of classic white Shakespearean parts -- Shylock, Macbeth, Richard III, even Iago. Aldridge was very popular in Ireland and remained there for six years, performing in venues large and small. He traveled often in his own carriage with assistants who supported him in scenes, enabling famous plays to be staged anywhere, even in villages that did not have a proper theater. He also performed periodically in large cities with professional acting companies, and returned to the London stage in 1848, after leaving it fifteen years earlier. During these years he expandedhis repertoire, refined his skills, and gained a reputation as one of Britain's most talented thespians. In dealing with Aldridge's emergence as a professional actor in the United Kingdom, Lindfors here records in detail theups and downs of his itinerant existence in a world where no theatergoer had ever seen anyone like him on stage before. Aldridge was genuinely a unique phenomenon in Britain at a pivotal point in history. Bernth Lindfors is Professor Emeritus of English and African Literatures, University of Texas at Austin, and editor of Ira Aldridge: The African Roscius (University of Rochester Press, 2007).

Middle-aged, Single White Female Takes a Drive 3 months, 10,000 miles alone to the middle of nowhere. “So how was your trip?” they asked. First of all, she turned 50. Isn’t that how it goes with aging? It was an outrage—how did this happen? Her children grown, husband gone to cancer, their business sold—Gloria Jean had reached middle age; she was on her own. Next! Was it a bucket list thing, life too short? Didn’t matter, Vagabond Chic beckoned; the first day of the rest of something lay ahead as her bold vision materialized, and once inspired, the odyssey seemed to plan itself. Months of research stretched to two years of getting prepared—a journey all its own. “We do not take a trip,” said John Steinbeck in his Travels with Charley. “A trip takes us.” This would come to mind many times as her May to September journey commenced. She drove the main streets of outer space—small towns, cheap motels, an assortment of critters, and more than once, a high spirited, didn’t-see-it-coming, moment. Train whistles echoed divine exhilaration across the prairie, as America was browsed beyond any route imagined, passing unnoticed along northern borders—Lake Superior to Fargo, the quiet solace of Wounded Knee in Dakota; the eureka moment in Hathaway, Montana; and the extraordinary personal discovery in Sheridan, Wyoming. Isolation weighed heavy at times, but the search for her personal holy grail weaves a compelling, serendipitous plot straight to its unforeseen conclusion. If it’s courage you seek for your own long-held inner something: “Courage is feeling the fear and doing it anyway.” Oprah said.

By the time he was six, John Freely had crossed the Atlantic four times. His childhood was spent on the mean streets of 1930s Brooklyn, where he scavenged for junk to sell and borrowed money for books; his first love being Homer's Odyssey. He was 15 when Japan attacked Pearl Harbor and 17 when he enlisted in the US Navy and embarked on the first great adventure of his life: joining a clandestine unit that helped the Kuomintang fight the Japanese. He served for two years, 96 days in combat and a total of 344 days overseas, which sparked a lifelong passion for travel. Returning home after the war, Freely fell in love with a beautiful girl who sang the blues. His own Penelope. Together they signed a blood pact to spend their life travelling the world. This unforgettable memoir takes the reader from the streets of New York to the corridors of provincial campus life; from World War II in the Pacific to the shores of the Bosphorus and from Ancient Troy to the isles of Dionysus and Ariadne. It is the story of a remarkable odyssey that has spanned nine decades, several continents and one great love. And still the odyssey continues, "as I ponder the meaning of an Ithaka and of exile as an art that takes a lifetime to master. "

It was a dirty job in a dirty war. Danny Curnow, known in the army family by his call sign, Vagabond, ran agents, informers. Played God with their lives and their deaths, and was the best at his job - and he quit when the stress overwhelmed him. Now he lives in quiet isolation and works as a guide to tourists visiting the monuments and cemeteries of an earlier, simpler, conflict on Normandy's D-Day beaches. Until the call comes from an old boss, Bentinick. Violence in Northern Ireland is on the rise again. Weapons are needed for a new campaign. Gaby Davies of MI5, sparky and ambitious, runs the double agent Ralph Exton, who will be the supposed middle man in brokering an arms deal with a Russian contact, Timofey. The covert world of deception and betrayal was close to destroying Danny across the Irish Sea. Fifteen years later the stakes are higher, the risks greater, and there is an added agenda on the table. If he wants to survive, Danny will have to prove, to himself, that he has not softened, that he is as hard and ruthless as before. VAGABOND shows Gerald Seymour writing at the top of his powers and returning to the territory of some of his greatest bestsellers, Harry's Game, Field of Blood and The Journeyman Tailor.
