अपने जीवन के पूर्वाह्न में--सन् 1909 में, जब भाग्य रुपयों से भरी थेलियाँ मेरे हाथों में पकड़ाना चाहता था--मैंने कलम पकड़ी। इस बात को आज 40 वर्ष बीत रहे हैं। इस बीच मैंने छोटी-बड़ी लगभग 84 पुस्तकें विविध विषयों पर लिखीं तथा दस हजार से अधिक पृष्ठ विविध सामयिक पत्रिकाओं में लिखे। इस साहित्य-साधना से मैंने पाया कुछ भी नहीं, खोया बहुत-कुछ, कहना चाहिए, सब कुछ--धन, वैभव, आराम और शांति। इतना ही नहीं, यौवन और सम्मान भी। इतना मूल्य चुकाकर निरंतर चालीस वर्षों की अर्जित अपनी संपूर्ण साहित्य-संपदा को मैं आज प्रसन्नता से रदृद करता है और यह घोषणा करता हूँ कि आज मैं अपनी यह पहली कृति विनयांजलि सहित आपको भेंट कर रहा हूँ। यह सत्य है कि यह उपन्यास है, परंतु इससे अधिक सत्य यह है कि यह एक गंभीर रहस्यपूर्ण संकेत है, जो उस काले परदे के प्रति है, जिसकी ओट में आर्यों के धर्म, साहित्य, राजसत्ता और संस्कृति की पराजय और मिश्रित जातियों की प्रगतिशील संस्कृति की विजय सहस्राब्दियों से छिपी हुई है, जिसे संभवत: किसी इतिहासकार ने आँख उषधाड़कर देखा नहीं है।
