Ensimmäinen perusteellinen kokonaisesitys kylmän sodan päättymisen vaikutuksista Suomen kansainväliseen asemaan. Kansainvälinen jännitys lieveni Mihail Gorbatšovin Neuvostoliitossa käynnistämän uudistuspolitiikan johdosta 1980-luvun lopulla. Baltian neuvostotasavallat vaativat uusia vapauksia, Unkari avasi rajansa länteen, Berliinin muuri kaatui ja Saksa yhdistyi, Jugoslaviassa ajauduttiin verenvuodatukseen. Euroopan kartta oli piirrettävä uudelleen. Myös Suomen itänaapurissa kuohui. Uudistuspolitiikan vastainen vallankaappausyritys elokuussa 1991 sekoitti valtion täydellisesti ja johti Neuvostoliiton lakkauttamiseen saman vuoden lopulla. Boris Jeltsinin johdolla syntyi uusi Venäjä. Suomelle nämä dramaattiset tapahtumat merkitsivät mullistusta, joka avasi uusia mahdollisuuksia, mutta sisälsi myös suuria riskejä. Jaakko Blomberg kuvailee oivallisesti Koiviston johtamaa politiikkaa ja muiden poliittisten toimijoiden kannanottoja. Miltä Suomen poliittisen johdon toimet näyttivät kansainvälisessä kontekstissa? The world wars, genocides and extremist ideologies of the 20th century are remembered very differently across Central, Eastern and Southeastern Europe, resulting sometimes in fierce memory disputes. This book investigates the complexity and contention of the layers of memory of the troubled 20th century in the region. This book takes a comprehensive approach to security in the Nordic-Baltic region, studying how this region is affected by developments in the international system. The advent of the new millennium coincided with the return of the High North to the world stage. A number of factors have contributed to the increased international interest for the northern part of Europe: climate change resulting in ice melting in Greenland and the Arctic, and new resources and shipping routes opening up across the polar basin foremost among them. The world is no longer "unipolar" and not yet "multipolar," but perhaps "post-unipolar", indicating a period of flux and of declining US unipolar hegemony. Drawing together contributions from key thinkers in the field, Northern Security and Global Politics explores how this situation has affected the Nordic-Baltic area by addressing two broad sets of questions. First, it examines what impact declining unipolarity - with a geopolitical shift to Asia, a reduced role for Europe in United States policy, and a more assertive Russia - will have on regional Nordic-Baltic security. Second, it takes a closer look at how the regional actors respond to these changes in their strategic environment. This edited collection re-examines the long history of Finnish-Namibian relations through the lens of colonialism without colonies as well as anti-colonialism. The book argues that although Finland never acquired colonies, Namibia was once treated in the areas of culture and knowledge formation in a manner now recognised as colonial. Namibian people’s ways of being in the world was transformed when the Finnish Missionary Society started its work in Owambo in 1870 and introduced Christianity and European modes of education, medicine, material culture and social practices. In time, cultural colonialism faded and during the Namibian struggle for independence from South African rule in 1966–1990 Finns took an actively anti-colonial approach. The book was written as a collaborative effort of Namibian, Finnish and South African scholars.

This book opens new perspectives into the Cold War ideological confrontations. Using Austria and Finland as an example, it shows how the Cold War battles for the hearts and minds of the people also influenced policies in countries that wished to stay outside the conflict. Following the model of older European neutrals, Austria and Finland sought to combine neutrality with democracy. The combination was eagerly challenged by ideological Cold Warriors on both sides of the divide and questioned at home too. Was neutrality risking the neutrals’ commitment to democracy, or did the commitment to the western type of democracy threaten their commitment to neutrality? Confronting these doubts grew into an organic part of practicing neutrality in the Cold War world. The neutrals needed to be exceptionally clear regarding the ideological foundations of their neutrality. Successful neutrality required a great deal of conceptual consistence and domestic unanimity. None of this was pre-given in Austria or Finland. However, in the model of Switzerland and Sweden, (armed) neutrality was systematically integrated with the official state ideology and promoted as a part of national identity. Legacies of these policies outlived the end of the Cold War.
