Desde 1940, la ciudad de Valencia ha cambiado de forma radical, mucho más que durante todo el siglo XX. Ha aumentado el radio, se ha construido la mayor parte del stock de viviendas existente, la población ha crecido en más de 300.000 personas, el área metropolitana se ha consolidado y ha incorporado nuevos territorios. Las infraestructuras y servicios se han multiplicado. Y todo ello ha sido el resultado de un proceso de construcción- destrucción. Historical studies on the involvement of architecture in twentieth-century politics have overlooked its contribution to building Spain’s democracy. This pioneering book seeks to fill that void. Between the late 1970s and early 1990s, Spain founded representative institutions, launched its welfare state, and devolved autonomy to its regions. The study brings forth the architectural incarnation of that threefold program as it deployed in the Valencian Country, a Catalan-speaking region on Spain’s Mediterranean shores. There, social democratic authorities mobilized architects, planners, and graphic artists to devise a newly open public sphere and to recover a local identity that Franco’s dictatorship had repressed for decades. The research follows the impetus of reform and its contradictions through urban projects, designs for cultural amenities, and the renovation of governmental and professional bodies. Architecture for Spain’s Recovered Democracy contributes to current debates on nationalism and the arts, the environments of democratic socialism, and postmodernism and neoliberalism. Culture- and event-led regeneration have been catalysts for the transformation of redundant urban port areas and for the reframing of the image of many port cities, which notably feature among mega-event bidding and host cities. However, there is little understanding of the impacts of these processes on port-city relationships, as well as of how port city cultures shape mega events and the related regeneration strategies. The book examines the underexplored mutual links between, on the one hand, urban and socio-economic regeneration driven by cultural and sporting mega events and, on the other hand, the spatial, political and symbolic ties between cities and their ports. By adopting a cross-national, comparative perspective, with in-depth case studies (Hull, Rotterdam, Genoa and Valencia) and examples from other port cities across the world where mega events were held, the book engages with issues such as the tension between port and cultural uses, reactions and opposition to mega events in port cities, clashing urban imaginaries drawing on port activity and culture, the role of port authorities and companies in the city’s cultural life, the spectacularisation and commodification of local maritime culture and heritage, processes of cultural demaritimisation and remaritimisation of port cities. The book is therefore a contribution towards the bridging of port city and mega-event studies, and it provides insights for port city policy makers and mega-event promoters, drawing from a range of international experiences. The book also shows how societal and political change in the current ‘ontologically-insecure’ times may undermine the very paradigm of culture- and event-led regeneration in the years to come.

Saheli HIV/AIDS Karyakarta Sangh es un colectivo de trabajadoras sexuales y una organización basada en la comunidad fundada en 1998 en Pune (Maharashtra, India), cuya misión es empoderar a mujeres de la prostitución mediante la colectivización. En agosto de 2012, 17 miembros de Saheli participaron en el taller Imagine Empowerment Workshop, diseñado para fortalecer a las mujeres en circunstancias vitales exigentes y así concebir y crear nuevas posibilidades para sus vidas, sus familias y sus comunidades a través de la participación. Water Consumption, Tariffs and Regulation aims to provide a statistical overview about water abstraction, consumption, tariffs and data on sewage and wastewater treatment at an international level. It is mainly based on the statistical information provided by IWA Specialist Group on Statistics and Economics. The book is structured in three main parts. Part I presents tables and figures relative to water consumption and sanitation status and focuses on water abstraction, water delivered, water consumption and the evolution of sewer connection and wastewater treatment. Part II focuses on the analysis of water tariffs by investigating the structure of water tariffs by analysing the importance of the variable and fixed charge. It presents drinking water tariffs and illustrates the relationship between tariffs and GDP and also the size of the cities. Finally, charges in wastewater are dealt with country by country. Part III analyses the main aspects relative to water regulation and describes the importance of private operators in the management of the water cycle. Information relative to the principles used to fix drinking water prices is presented with an assessment of access to public water services.

Discussions of the illicit and the illegal have tended to be somewhat restricted in their disciplinary range, to date, and have been largely confined to the literatures of anthropology, criminology, policing and, to an extent, political science. However, these debates have impinged little on cognate literatures, not least those of urban and regional studies which remain almost entirely undisturbed by such issues. This volume aims to open up debates across a range of cognate disciplines. The Illicit and Illegal in Regional and Urban Governance and Development is a multidisciplinary volume that aims to open up these debates, extending them empirically and questioning the dominant discussions of governance and development that have been rooted largely or entirely in the realm of licit and legal actors. The book investigates these issues with reference to a variety of different geographical contexts, including, but not limited to, places traditionally considered to be associated with illegal activities and extensive illicit markets, such as some regions in the so-called Global South. The chapters consider the ways in which these questions deeply affect the daily lives of several cities and regions in some advanced countries. Their comparative perspectives will demonstrate that the illicit and the illegal are an underappreciated structural aspect of current urban and regional governance and development across the globe. Las áreas rurales europeas han sufrido un proceso de cambio socloeconómlco desde la década de los SO hasta principio de los 70. Es en esta década cuando se desarrolla, desde el ámbito académico (y más tarde en el Institucional y económico), un cambio de paradigma en las políticas rurales, que evolucionan desde un enfoque sectorial hacia otro más Integrado y con una doble vertiente, social y económica. Entre las conclusiones de este trabajo se destaca la fa lta de una mayor Integración de las mujeres en estos procesos. En las áreas españolas no se ha conseguido vincular un importante número de mujeres; mientras que, en el caso del área británica, la Integración de las mujeres es más paritaria. Por tanto, en ambos casos todavía queda un largo camino por recorrer en materia de Igualdad y equidad entre ambos sexos.
