Con motivo de la conmemoración del cincuenta aniversario de la riada de 1957, el MuVIM quiso ofrecer no sólo una documentada exposición 'La riuà que canvià València', en cuyo catálogo se encuentra una narración rigurosa, y en ocasiones novedosa, de los hechos ocurridos 'antecedentes incluidos' y de sus consecuencias inmediatas. Como en otras ocasiones, el MuVIM organizó también unas jornadas, donde el objetivo central fue analizar algunos procesos determinantes de la transformación experimentada por la ciudad en los cincuenta años posteriores a la riada. Este libro, fruto de aquellas jornadas realizadas en noviembre de 2007, pretende abrir nuevas perspectivas de discusión y contraste que ayuden a definir, de la forma más consensuada posible, políticas urbanas sensatas y eficientes.

This volume celebrates the 50th anniversary of the Society for Medieval Archaeology (established in 1957), presenting reflections on the history, development and future prospects of the discipline. The papers are drawn from a series of conferences and workshops that took place in 2007-08, in addition to a number of contributions that were commissioned especially for the volume. They range from personal commentaries on the history of the Society and the growth of the subject (see papers by David Wilson and Rosemary Cramp), to historiographical, regional and thematic overviews of major trends in the evolution and current practice of medieval archaeology. Historical studies on the involvement of architecture in twentieth-century politics have overlooked its contribution to building Spain’s democracy. This pioneering book seeks to fill that void. Between the late 1970s and early 1990s, Spain founded representative institutions, launched its welfare state, and devolved autonomy to its regions. The study brings forth the architectural incarnation of that threefold program as it deployed in the Valencian Country, a Catalan-speaking region on Spain’s Mediterranean shores. There, social democratic authorities mobilized architects, planners, and graphic artists to devise a newly open public sphere and to recover a local identity that Franco’s dictatorship had repressed for decades. The research follows the impetus of reform and its contradictions through urban projects, designs for cultural amenities, and the renovation of governmental and professional bodies. Architecture for Spain’s Recovered Democracy contributes to current debates on nationalism and the arts, the environments of democratic socialism, and postmodernism and neoliberalism. As a result, it widens our understanding of how peripheral regions may yield egalitarian architectures of resistance. Desde 1940, la ciudad de Valencia ha cambiado de forma radical, mucho más que durante todo el siglo XX. Ha aumentado el radio, se ha construido la mayor parte del stock de viviendas existente, la población ha crecido en más de 300.000 personas, el área metropolitana se ha consolidado y ha incorporado nuevos territorios. Las infraestructuras y servicios se han multiplicado. Y todo ello ha sido el resultado de un proceso de construcción- destrucción. Es cierto que la ciudad -todas las ciudades- se construye sobre sus ruinas, pero la ciudad construida no necesariamente tiene que ser motivo de orgullo. Ha habido destrucción, física y de la memoria histórica, no siempre necesaria y justificada, y los nuevos tejidos urbanos y sociales con los que nos toca lidiar no son una bicoca más allá de la propaganda oficial.
