After growing up in rural North America in the 1920s and 1930s, Wilf Burnett (known in his family as Bamp) left Canada to join the RAF in 1937. This book tells the story of his decorated and distinguished 31 year career in the Royal Air Force. He flew on three operational tours during World War II. After the war and a secondment to BOAC on long-range flying boats, he flew a wide range of piston and jet military aircraft. He undertook exploratory flights to the North Pole and led the first V-bomber (Valiant) squadron into action during the Suez Crisis. After commanding a V-bomber base, his later career took him to senior posts in India and Aden. In retirement he continued to live a full life, pursuing his many interests. He often commented on how lucky he was to have had "The Best of Lives".

This book gives a rare insight into the life inside the tanker squadrons of the Royal Air Force, viewed through the eyes of Tony Golds, one of the R.A.F. tanker fleets longest serving Navigator/Plotters. He was in one of the tanker crews chosen to assist in devising the procedures needed to get both the Vulcans in the Black Buck operation down to the Falklands, and subsequently the Hercules C130 freighters to form the Ascension / Falklands air bridge, so vital for the support of the Falkland Islands, once the shooting war was over.

Macau, on the threshold of the twentieth-first century, is perhaps a harbinger of a new urban culture. Having been nurtured by the sharply constrasting legacies of China and Portugal, this unique city manages to meld cultural differences and avoid the destructiveness of ethnic clashes. It is thus likened here to the Roman deity Janus, who is usually depicted with two faces looking in opposite directions. By concentrating on the ambivalent history of Macau, the author reveals the historical reality of cultural vacillation between two political entities and the emergence of a creole minority - the Macanese. With a judicious use of English, Chinese, and Portuguese sources, she has provided a pathbreaking, multi-focal perspective of the last Portuguese outpost in Asia. In light of the 'decolonization' of Macau in December 1999, the author's analysis challenges the easy assumptions of the causal sequence: colonialism/postcolonialism, and opens up an interdisciplinary purview of a local instance in cross-cultural studies.
