This report begins with background on the New Brunswick forest resource and on value-added wood product manufacturing in the province. It then describes the research methodology & presents results of research into the New Brunswick value-added wood manufacturing sector. This research included a review of documentary sources and of experience & policy in other jurisdictions, and interviews with manufacturers, Crown licensees, and marketing boards. The findings relate to such matters as: provincial timber supply and its adequacy to the sector; timber imports & exports, and the dependence of manufacturers on imports; policy initiatives that could merit trial in New Brunswick; the characteristics of the two distinct types of value-added wood manufacturers in the province; supplier relationships; small manufacturers' problems in obtaining supply; and ways that timber supply could be enhanced. The final section offers conclusions & recommendations intended to improve value-added manufacturers' ability to secure adequate supplies of raw materials to continue their businesses profitably. Appendices include copies of questionnaires used in the research, a summary of responses, and industry statistics.

This report attempts to assess the importance of forestry to the New Brunswick economy.
