This study presents opportunities for transformation to low carbon agrifood value chains through scaling up successful climate-smart agriculture (CSA) practices. The study draws upon data from 173 Farmer Field Schools (FFS) conducted by the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) as part of the IFAD-funded ‘Sustainable Agriculture Investments and Livelihoods’ (SAIL) Project, implemented by the Ministry of Agriculture and Land Reclamation (MoALR) in Egypt. The study assesses the potential for increasing farmers’ incomes, decreasing greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions, and improving water-use efficiency (WUE) following the implementation of CSA interventions. It also analyses sustainable value chain production models for selected crops, with the goal of establishing climate-smart value chains that are economically feasible and present financial investment opportunities for small investors.

Sugar Industry is the second largest agro based industry in India, next to textile. This is the only industry, located in the rural part of the country. About five crores of sugarcane farmers, their dependants and a large mass of labourers are involved in sugarcane cultivation, harvesting and other related ancillary activities. This constitutes 7.5 per cent of the rural population. Besides, over a five lakhs of skilled and semi-skilled workers, mostly from the rural areas, are employed in the sugar industry, and the annual wage bill of the industry is around Rs.1,000 crores, per year. Presently, Indian sugar industry contributes 15 per cent of the world sugar production. Though, there are more than 700 sugar mills in different stages of installation, almost 450 mills alone are in operation. The annual turnover of the industry goes to Rs.30,000 crores, and cane growers, use to get Rs.6,000 crores, as sugarcane price.

Globalization and industrialization involve a number of reactions, products, extractions, and separations that require the use of organic solvents. These solvents are responsible for a number of ecological concerns, including atmospheric and land toxicity. Conventional organic solvents are regarded as volatile organic compounds; some are even limited due to their potential for ozone layer depletion. While supercritical liquids exhibit physical properties that could make them ideal substitutes for these volatile compounds, there is particular interest in the use of carbon dioxide as a solvent of crude material. In particular, carbon dioxide has apparent ‘green’ properties, like its noncombustible nature, the fact that it is generally nonpoisonous, and its relative inertness. Thus, the use of supercritical carbon dioxide can provide practical improvements to the sustainability of industrial products and processes.
