In this book Carola Normann-Tschampel develops an enhanced understanding of the relevance of Value-Based Management (VBM) to management practice in Mittelstand. A theory-practice gap is identified based on a unique overview of the field of research. The empirical investigation focuses on three specifically identified areas of management (strategic decision-making, objectives, attitudes) and uses a specific research approach. The insights gained from taking an interpretive stance towards owner-managers’ practical experience provide a valuable basis to further address the overall research gap.

Context and Application Value-Based Management Edited by Glen Arnold and Matt Davies Over the past ten years hundreds of leading companies worldwide have adopted the principles of value-based management (VBM), an approach to corporate strategy and business organisation in which the primary objective is always shareholder wealth maximisation. As VBM has become more widespread the idea of shareholder value has become integral to business. Consultancies have prospered by selling prescriptions for developing a value-oriented firm and managers thought to be excellent in generating shareholder value are held in high esteem and command huge salaries. This book draws on empirical evidence to demonstrate the success of VBM ideas as well as highlighting many of the hidden questions, doubts and difficulties. It examines the validity of some of the underlying assumptions of VBM and tackles many of the key technical issues. This book provides a timely assessment of the theory and practice of VBM as it grows to maturity.

This second decade of the millennium finds the world changing at a once unimaginable pace. Businesses, tangled in the interwoven threads of galloping globalization, technological advances, cultural diversity, economic recession and deep-rooted human social evolution, struggle to keep up with incessant changes; consequently and inexorably experiencing severe difficulties and disorientation. Executives, much bewildered, habitually turn to conventional, time-honoured strategies and practices, which increasingly fail to offer the much-sought answers and means to survival, competitiveness and growth. We are currently experiencing a business era of turbulence and dynamic change – an era that inherently rejects conventionality and orthodox business theory to reward businesses embracing agility, reflex-style adaptability, innovation and creativity. This turbulence is, however, not a parenthesis or even a pattern, but the new reality in which each business must reinvent and redefine itself. This is a new reality of stakeholders that shift focus from the external to the internal, from the tangible to the intangible, and from fact to perception. This book presents research and paradigms that transcend classical theory in order to examine how business practice is positively affected by these conditions. Across a multitude of sectors and organisational types, scholars of different business specialisations set the theoretical foundations of contemporary thinking and present their practical implementations.

Bachelor Thesis from the year 2011 in the subject Business economics - Business Management, Corporate Governance, grade: 1,7, University of Applied Sciences Essen, language: English, abstract: 1.3 Scope of Work The thesis is divided into two main parts. In the first part, the theoretical background of value-based management is explained in detail. First, the reasons are pointed out why traditional key figures are not suitable to measure the corporate success and as a result, why value-based concepts are used. Subsequently, the methodologies for the determination of a company's cost of capital and for corporate valuation are presented in detail. The consideration of both the cost for equity capital and debt capital add the element of risk to determine the actual performance. This knowledge is the basis for multi-period value-based planning. Secondly, the most common approaches based on this theoretical background are introduced and elaborated. They integrate the key target of increasing the corporate value sustainably in the long term as a business philosophy which creates a holistic framework of action for the diverse tasks within a company. The second part brings to light, which companies of the thirty companies listed in the DAX are reporting a value-based management approach and further, which approaches these companies have implemented. As the parameters on which the calculation is based differ and are defined in different ways by the companies analyzed, these figures are surveyed. Even though not all companies which are using a value-based approach do report information about it in their annual reports or in other publications, especially the annual reports give information about the extent of spread. Literature is taken into account up to January 1, 2011. The two last annual reports including IFRS financial statements are considered for the analysis which were published by all companies listed in the DAX at that date.

How important is it to actually live a company's values? Values provide internal and external orientation and legitimize decisions and actions. They also send a signal that the company is a reliable cooperation partner. They can, therefore, help businesses lower their costs and improve their economic value creation. If lived values have such advantages, why is explicit-and effective-values management not as widespread as one might think? How do inconsistencies between propagated values and actual behavior arise, and what is the role that misled expectations among different stakeholders may play? Two case studies of internationally successful corporations illustrate the context and show how to leverage explicit values management.

Value Based Performance Measures written by Nils Eikelmann and has been published by Springer Nature this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2020-08-19 with Business & Economics categories.

Nils Eikelmann describes the framework conditions for the application of value-based performance measures and critically analyses selected ones. The disclosure of value-based performance indicators is important in order to demonstrate the successful management of a company and to satisfy the increasing information needs of investors. However, companies adapt the developed theoretical concepts of value-based performance measures to their practical needs and thus investors are no longer able to compare the performance of companies. In addition, there is a variety of different metrics from which companies can choose. The empirical study aims to reduce existing research gaps and is divided into three parts: the analysis of annual reports of selected European companies, the calculation of a standardised value-based performance measure and a value relevance study in the form of an association study.
