This monograph describes an investigation into the family values of colored and white cultural groups in South Africa. Experts in social work and marriage counseling were first surveyed, followed by in-depth interviews in groups with varying combinations of culture, language, social class and age differences. Detailed findings are presented on beliefs about the survival of the family as a lifestyle, family types, and expectations and opinions on love, communication, authority patterns, childrearing, and sex education and changing values underlying sexuality. Special attention was given to beliefs about social factors and values promoting high quality marriage, family life, and parent-child relationships. Based on findings, the monograph provides recommendations for programs that would promote the development of family life. Includes an abstract in Afrikaans. (Contains 31 references.) (JPB)

The aim of this encyclopedia is to provide a comprehensive reference work on scientific and other scholarly research on the quality of life, including health-related quality of life research or also called patient-reported outcomes research. Since the 1960s two overlapping but fairly distinct research communities and traditions have developed concerning ideas about the quality of life, individually and collectively, one with a fairly narrow focus on health-related issues and one with a quite broad focus. In many ways, the central issues of these fields have roots extending to the observations and speculations of ancient philosophers, creating a continuous exploration by diverse explorers in diverse historic and cultural circumstances over several centuries of the qualities of human existence. What we have not had so far is a single, multidimensional reference work connecting the most salient and important contributions to the relevant fields. Entries are organized alphabetically and cover basic concepts, relatively well established facts, lawlike and causal relations, theories, methods, standardized tests, biographic entries on significant figures, organizational profiles, indicators and indexes of qualities of individuals and of communities of diverse sizes, including rural areas, towns, cities, counties, provinces, states, regions, countries and groups of countries.

If you want to be in better, happier control of your family, this book has simple, workable solutions! If the kids are uncooperative, disrespectful or won't help with the chores then it means you aren't in control! This book can remedy with that as well. If you don't have those situations, but would just like to have a happier family, any of the 18 Keys can help you have that. Parents are faced with more challenges than ever before and will find these solutions invaluable. "18 Keys to Having a Happier Family" was created with the purpose to preserve the value of the family in the face of declining morals and other challenges to parents in raising their children. It is important to make it easier for parents to nurture and enjoy their children they so love and for children to respect their parents. Most families no longer spend enough quality time together. A current and alarming statistic is that parents engage in meaningful conversation with their children only an average of 3 1/2 minutes per week (according to the A. C. Nielsen Co.). Fewer parents are able to stay home for hands-on and caring parenting. Instead, they're struggling to meet the challenges of juggling family and work, especially in today's economy. Many families share fewer meals together and have fewer loving moments. Too often the kids are "glued" to the TV, video games and computers. Parents may feel they don't have time to spend with their children, but making the time is vital to the children's and the parent's well-being. If you are concerned about the decline of family values, you are not alone. The meaning of "Family Values" may have become misused and confused, but the value of the family is immense and indisputable as the foundation of a sane and thriving society. Family Values can be defined as valuing the family -- valuing the love, care and support of the family members individually and as a group and spending quality time together. "Family life is the source of the greatest happiness. This happiness is the simplest and least costly kind, and it cannot be purchased with money." Robert J. Havighurst Kids are our future and help for you and them is here in this simple, friendly guide to creating a happier family! Decades of research have demonstrated that the parent-child dyad and the environment of the familyâ€"which includes all primary caregiversâ€"are at the foundation of children's well- being and healthy development. From birth, children are learning and rely on parents and the other caregivers in their lives to protect and care for them. The impact of parents may never be greater than during the earliest years of life, when a child's brain is rapidly developing and when nearly all of her or his experiences are created and shaped by parents and the family environment. Parents help children build and refine their knowledge and skills, charting a trajectory for their health and well-being during childhood and beyond. The experience of parenting also impacts parents themselves. For instance, parenting can enrich and give focus to parents' lives; generate stress or calm; and create any number of emotions, including feelings of happiness, sadness, fulfillment, and anger. Parenting of young children today takes place in the context of significant ongoing developments. These include: a rapidly growing body of science on early childhood, increases in funding for programs and services for families, changing demographics of the U.S. population, and greater diversity of family structure. Additionally, parenting is increasingly being shaped by technology and increased access to information about parenting. Parenting Matters identifies parenting knowledge, attitudes, and practices associated with positive developmental outcomes in children ages 0-8; universal/preventive and targeted strategies used in a variety of settings that have been effective with parents of young children and that support the identified knowledge, attitudes, and practices; and barriers to and facilitators for parents' use of practices that lead to healthy child outcomes as well as their participation in effective programs and services. This report makes recommendations directed at an array of stakeholders, for promoting the wide-scale adoption of effective programs and services for parents and on areas that warrant further research to inform policy and practice. It is meant to serve as a roadmap for the future of parenting policy, research, and practice in the United States.

Family Life written by Jesper Juul and has been published by AuthorHouse this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2012-07-27 with Family & Relationships categories.

This book captures the essence of modern family life. Much has changed since our own childhoods; the good old days. Todays parents are challenged by the need to invent their own parenting style. This can only happen from within, based on our personal values and boundaries. Jesper Juul puts it very clearly: The love we feel for our children and our partners does not in itself have any value. It has no value at all until it is converted into loving behavior. Each chapter focuses on the values that form a solid platform on which to build a family: Equal dignity, Integrity, Authenticity and Responsibility. This makes family life more meaningful and parents avoid living frantically from conflict to conflict, desperately searching for quick solutions and trying to adapt to the most popular parenting technique of the day. A book full of everyday examples and practical ideas.

Marriage And Modernization written by Don S. Browning and has been published by Wm. B. Eerdmans Publishing this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2003-03-20 with Family & Relationships categories.

The processes of modernization and globalization promise more wealth and health for many people. But they are also a threat to the stability and quality of marriage and family life. This new book -- at once sobering and constructive -- looks at the impact of these processes on marriage and asks what Christianity, in cooperation with other religions, can do to strengthen married life today. Among the deleterious effects of modernization and globalization on marriage are a worldwide drift of men away from the responsibility of parenthood and the tendency of mothers too readily to take on the task of childrearing alone. After looking at recent research on these and other problems, Don Browning suggests that the cure for modern marital disruption entails reforming and reconstructing the institution of marriage while also nurturing relevant forms of social support. Yet the effort to initiate a "world marriage revival" requires a complex cultural work, and Browning explores the key contributions that the religions of the world must make for such an effort to be successful.
