A century after Bram Stoker made the Vampire one of the most potent images in all literature, the cult of the undead is as alive as ever. Not only on celluloid and in the pages of fiction, but in the S&M clubs of New York City, in Midwest high schools and English pubs, across the forests of Puerto Rico and the jungles of Malaysia, the creature walks among us. In Children of the Night Tony Thorne provides the ultimate account of the history, meaning, and resonance of the Vampire, drawing on explorations in Eastern Europe, new theories of the origin of the Vampire and exclusive interviews with contemporary living Vampires, the very latest incarnations of a phenomenon which simply will not die.

The Vampire S Bedside Companion written by Peter Underwood and has been published by Peter Underwood this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 1975 with Fiction categories.

The Vampire’s Bedside Companion is a riveting compendium of new facts and fiction on the ‘undying’ theme of vampirism. Here is a new theory on the genesis of Dracula (surely literature’s most compelling and macabre figure?); thoughts on allusions to vampirism in Wuthering Heights; first-hand experience of Vampires in Hampstead, London; publication for the first time of the story of a fifteenth-century Vampire Protection medallion that Montague Summers presented to the author; an account by a professor of English at Dalhousie University of a visit to ‘Castle Dracula’ in Transylvania - The Vampire’s Bedside Companion contains these and a wealth of other hitherto unpublished material on a subject that is of enduring interest: The Vampire Legend. To many people, vampires are creatures only of legend and fantasy with no reality outside the pages of books. Others, who have studied the folklore of many countries and the continuing reports of vampirism, maintain that there is extensive evidence not only that vampires once existed but that, in fact, they still do exist. In this fascinating book the author, himself an acknowledged expert on the Occult, presents true accounts of vampire infestation in England, America, Ireland, Hungary, China and France. Records of vampires and vampirism are, he claims, as old as the world and as recent as yesterday. Four new, existing and authentic vampire fictional stories by Peter Allan, Crispin Derby, Richard Howard and James Turner complete this compelling companion for dark nights, solitude and howling winds! Illustrated with my striking photographs, The Vampire’s Bedside Companion also contains original and evocative drawings by Geoffrey Bourne-Taylor. It is a must for all students of the occult and every reader of the macabre.

The Vampire written by Alan Dundes and has been published by Univ of Wisconsin Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 1998-10-15 with Fiction categories.

Vampires are the most fearsome and fascinating of all creatures of folklore. For the first time, detailed accounts of the vampire and how its tradition developed in different cultures are gathered in one volume by eminent folklorist Alan Dundes. Eleven leading scholars from the fields of Slavic studies, history, anthropology, and psychiatry unearth the true nature of the vampire from its birth in graveyard lore to the modern-day psychiatric patient with a penchant for drinking blood. The Vampire: A Casebook takes this legend out of the realm of literature and film and back to its dark beginnings in folk traditions. The essays examine the history of the word “vampire;” Romanian vampires; Greek vampires; Serbian vampires; the physical attributes of vampires; the killing of vampires; and the possible psychoanalytic underpinnings of vampires. Much more than simply a scary creature of the human imagination, the vampire has been and continues to haunt the lives of all those who encounter it—in reality or in fiction.

Vampires Today written by Joseph P. Laycock and has been published by Bloomsbury Publishing USA this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2009-05-14 with Social Science categories.

This book, about real vampires and the communities they have formed, explores the modern world of vampirism in all its amazing variety. Long before Dracula, people were fascinated by vampires. The interest has continued in more recent times with Anne Rice's Lestat novels, Buffy the Vampire Slayer, the HBO series True Blood, and the immensely popular Twilight. But vampires are not just the stuff of folklore and fiction. Based upon extensive interviews with members of the Atlanta Vampire Alliance and others within vampire communities throughout the United States, this fascinating book looks at the details of real vampire life and the many expressions of vampirism as it now exists. In Vampires Today: The Truth about Modern Vampirism, Joseph Laycock argues that today's vampires are best understood as an identity group, and that vampirism has caused a profound change in how individuals choose to define themselves. As vampires come "out of the coffin," as followers of a "religion" or "lifestyle" or as people biologically distinct from other humans, their confrontation with mainstream society will raise questions, as it does here, about how we define "normal" and what it means to be human.

“The Vampire - His Kith and Kin” is a 1928 work by English clergyman and author Montague Summers. Within it, Summers discusses the vampire phenomena from a Catholic point of view, offering an a veritably academic study of the subject. Contents include: “The Origins of the Vampire”, “The Generation of the Vampire”, “The Traits and Practice of Vampirism”, “The Vampire in Assyria, the East, and Some Ancient Countries”, and “The Vampire in Literature”. Augustus Montague Summers (1880 – 1948) was an English clergyman and author most famous for his studies on vampires, witches and werewolves—all of which he believed to be very much real. He also wrote the first English translation of the infamous 15th-century witch hunter's manual, the “Malleus Maleficarum”, in 1928. Other notable works by this author include: “A Popular History of Witchcraft” (1937), “Witchcraft and Black Magic” (1946), and “The Physical Phenomena of Mysticism” (1947).
