From as early as classical antiquity there has been an interplay between literature and medicine. The first book of Homer's Ilias recounts the plague that swept the camp of the Achaeans. While this instance concerns a full-length book, it is the aphorism that is of greater importance as a literary technique for the dissemination of medical knowledge, from the "Corpus Hippocraticum" of antiquity until the "Aphorismi de cognoscendis et curandis morbis" (1715) by Herman Boerhaave. In addition, the subject of illness and its impact on mankind was explored by great numbers of poetic scholars and scholarly poets.This collection offers fourteen articles which all highlight the relation between disease and literature. It entails a first-ever overview of Dutch-language research in this field, whereby the literary and cultural functions of medical knowledge and the poetics of medical and literary writing are in the focus.

Anton Reinhard Falck maakte de turbulente tijd van het einde van de achttiende en het begin van de negentiende eeuw actief mee. Nieuwe ideeën, revolutie en oorlog zetten Europa op zijn kop. Eeuwenoude instellingen en praktijken gingen ten onder. Nieuwe vormen van staat en bestuur probeerde men uit. Maar men streefde geleidelijk ook naar orde en rust. Falck was ambitieus. Hij werd geïnspireerd door de filosofie van de Verlichting. Persoonlijke vrijheid, redelijkheid, tolerantie, kosmopolitisme en dienstbaarheid werden zijn principes. Zij waren zijn bouwstenen voor de samenleving van de toekomst. Maar ook zijn persoonlijk moreel kompas. In 1813 speelde hij een grote rol in de overgang van de Franse overheersing onder Napoleon naar een opnieuw zelfstandig Nederland. Als minister was hij een van de bouwers aan de monarchie van Willem I. In het samengaan van Nederland en België in 1815 zag hij een middel de horizon van Nederland te verleggen en de ramen te openen. Bleef Falck overeind in deze woelige tijd? Of bleek het moeilijk idealen in de praktijk te brengen? Zijn levensbeschrijving steunt op zijn brieven, reisverslagen, aantekeningen, dagboeken en memoires, waarin Falck met anderen en zichzelf in gesprek was. Donald Haks is historicus en publiceerde eerder over Nederland in de zeventiende en achttiende eeuw.

Protestant Theology and Modernity in the Nineteenth Century Netherlands examines how Dutch Protestant thinkers and theologicans met the challenges of the rapidly modernizing world around them. It shows that the nineteenth-century saw theology fundamentally transformed and reinvented in a variety of ways. Enlightenment values were fiercely attacked by orthodox Pietists but embraced by 'modern' theologians. Positions were not fixed and theologians has to work hard to maintain their intellectual integrity. Jewish Isaac da Costa converted to Christianity and fulminated against the Zeitgeist. Allard Pierson, who in his youth had been under the spell of Da Costa, resigned from his ministry and adopted an 'agnostic' stance. Abraham Kuyper modernized theology and politics, by laying the foundations of 'pillarization' (the segmented social structures based on differences in religion and worldview) of Dutch society. Abraham Kuenen revolutionized the study of the Old Testament, and Protestant theologians made ground-breaking contributions to the emerging science of religion. This book used in-depth studies of a small number of significant and influential Protestant thinkers to analyse how they addressed specific modern transformation processes such as political modernization, the pluralization of world views, and the emergence of critical historical scholarship. It also considers the significant Dutch contribution to the historical-critical study of the Bible, and the emergence of the modern comparative study of religion.

Floods are a fundamental part of Dutch history. Indeed, having ‘tamed’ the threats associated with living below sea level is part of Dutch national identity. In the cultural depictions of these devastating events, however, national pride at a certain collective resilience goes hand-in-hand with the collective trauma of exposed vulnerability. All too often, the Dutch were the losers in these battles against the elements. In a time of rising global sea levels, cultural scholar Lotte Jensen dives into the stories and images of the past to unpack this paradox for today. Over the centuries, large parts of the Netherlands have been progressively reclaimed from its river delta home. Throughout that process, the country suffered countless floods, a number of which were truly catastrophic, such as the Saint Elizabeth’s Flood of 1421 or the North Sea Flood of 1953. Jensen describes how the Dutch have dealt with these disasters, in practice but also in the imagination. It is the story of babies in floating cradles, fatherly monarchs, community fundraisers, and the boy who stuck his finger in the dike. Centuries before the nation-building associated with the 1800s, the Dutch created a unifying ‘us’ – the image of the Dutch lion – against a ‘them’ – the ‘waterwolf’, the major threat which water embodied. This national feeling and narrative were crafted with a set repertoire of images; role models (heroes and monarchs); charity (national and international solidarity); and a culture of remembrance. Jensen gives particular attention to the at times funny poems, books and songs, later criticized as clichéd or melodramatic, which these collective traumas inspired. She also demonstrates through monuments and works of art how this narrative has multiplied and acquired variations with time right up to the present. Though once cast in a more religious light – the flood as punishment for a general lack of religious devotion – the waterwolf has become, for example, a collective responsibility for the environment that begins with lifestyle choices. Today the Netherlands lives with water more than it battles it, some thinkers even envisioning an ‘amphibian’ future for the country. The stories and images of the past, however, reveal that precisely vulnerability can be fertile ground for solidarity and togetherness. With rising sea levels representing a growing threat, this well-researched and highly readable cultural history shows how over time a culture’s imagination can gain new relevance beyond its borders. Acknowledging and building from a place of collective vulnerability might now be more important than ever.

In de zomer van 1823 verscheen een werk dat een einde maakte aan iedere vakantiestemming: Bezwaren tegen den geest der eeuw van Bilderdijks leerling Isaäc da Costa. Daarin ging Da Costa tekeer tegen de verworvenheden van de Verlichting. Vlak daarvoor was in Haarlem het Laurens Janszoon Coster-feest gevierd. Maar er gebeurde in 1823 nog meer. Jacob van Lennep en Dirk van Hogendorp maakten een voettocht door Nederland, en Abraham Capadose bond de strijd aan tegen de koepokinenting. Dit Jaarboek Bilderdijk bevat verschillende bijdragen over het jaar 1823, een interview met SGP-politicus Kees van der Staaij over de betekenis van 1823 voor 2023 en enkele losse bijdragen.

Pierre Chevallier ontwikkelde zich van een recalcitrante intellectuele betweter tot een bedachtzaam en irenisch theoloog, die naast zijn dagelijkse gemeentewerk in Amsterdam ook activiteiten ontwikkelde, die de grenzen van zijn Waalse gemeente ver te buiten gingen. Hij maakte zich verdienstelijk voor het Nederlands Zendeling Genootschap en het Nederlands Bijbelgenootschap, maar ook spande hij zich in om koning Lodewijk Napoleon de Nederlandse taal te leren. Het is interessant te zien, hoe deze erudiete Waalse predikant evolueerde van een overtuigd patriot tot een loyaal royalist zonder zijn principes geweld aan te doen. Deze familiekroniek laat de lezer bovendien getuige zijn van onverwachte gebeurtenissen en pijnlijke ervaringen, die hem nog lang zullen bijblijven.
