Op reis met een groot schrijver. Behalve romans en verhalen publiceerde Louis Couperus een grote hoeveelheid columns, losse schetsen en reisnotities. Die verschenen in kranten, voornamelijk in Het Vaderland. ‘Van en over alles en iedereen’ bevat vooral reisnotities. Couperus reist naar Rome, Genève, Florence, Sicilië, Venetië, München, Barcelona, Granada en andere plekken in Spanje. Vaak doet hij musea aan en overbluft ons met zijn kennis van de Antieke Oudheid. Van Spanje schetst hij een beeld dat wij, een eeuw later, amper nog herkennen. Hij doet inspiratie op voor zijn Spanje-roman ‘De ongelukkige’, laat heden en verleden van de steden die hij opzoekt door elkaar lopen, flirt met zijn grote liefde Orlando en schuwt de kritiek niet (‘Napels, la bella Napoli... is eigenlijk heelemaal niet mooi’),. ‘Van en over alles en iedereen’ is daardoor nog altijd heel geschikt voor Italië-liefhebbers. Louis Couperus (1863-1923) was een Nederlands romanschrijver, columnist en dichter. Hij is de auteur van verschillende onverwoestbare klassiekers: 'Eline Vere' (een bestseller bij verschijnen), 'Van oude menschen, de dingen, die voorbij gaan...' (verfilmd), 'De stille kracht'... Hij woonde o.m. in Frankrijk en Italië en reisde de wereld rond. Of zijn romans zich nu afspelen in Den Haag of Djakarta, het heden of het oude Rome, het noodlot speelt altijd een grote rol. Couperus schreef in een meeslepende, emotionele stijl. Zijn verzameld werk bestrijkt vijftig boekdelen.

Ineke Phaf-Rheinberger has been very active in Latin American and Caribbean literary criticism for two decades, first at the Free University in Berlin and later at the University of Maryland. The editor of A History of Literature in the Caribbean, A. James Arnold, is Professor of French at the University of Virginia, where he founded the New World Studies graduate program. Over the past twenty years he has been a pioneer in the historical study of the Négritude movement and its successors in the francophone Caribbean.
