Fifty of Vincent van Gogh's celebrated paintings reveal the influences of British art and literature on his early career as well as his impact on British artists. Vincent van Gogh, the postimpressionist painter, remains among the most influential figures in the history of Western art. His 871 oil-on-canvas works and numerous sketches shaped the development of contemporary painting, as his tumultuous and tragic personal life typified the idea of a tortured artist. While much has been written on van Gogh, there is little scholarship on his early twenties, a period in which his artistic identity took form in London, England. Van Gogh and Britain follows the painter from his first exposure to British culture in the 1870s, when he lived in south London, to his influence on British art as he achieved iconic status in the 1950s. As a young art dealer in training, van Gogh wandered the streets of London, absorbing the work of the pre-Raphaelites, Shakespeare, and Charles Dickens, reporting happily to his brother Theo: "Things are going well for me here." This book reveals the British ideas, books, paintings, and prints that caught the unknown van Gogh's attention, in turn informing both his ideals and his practical investigations of a radical, egalitarian style. Even after moving to France, van Gogh's preoccupation with British art and literature remains visible in his dramatically original late works, including major pictures such as The Bedroom and Van Gogh's Chair. British painters and collectors were among the first to respond to van Gogh's work when he briefly participated in the Paris art scene, but his full impact would arrive later in the twentieth century, when the artist became an embodiment of embattled human creativity, inspiring modern British painters from Walter Sickert to Francis Bacon.

Van Gogh and Britain at Tate Britain will be the first major exhibition both to explore the impact of British culture on Vincent van Gogh and to trace the introduction of his art into Britain and its legacy in the works of British painters. Published to accompany the show, this lavishly illustrated publication illustrates fifty van Gogh paintings, and traces the story from the artist's obscure years in England in the 1870s through his growing influence and reputation to iconic status in the 1950s. These works are accompanied by paintings by British artists that affected him and which he in turn inspired. The publication looks at van Gogh's time in Britain in his early twenties (1873-6), investigating his experience of the largest city in the world and the ideas, books, paintings and prints which caught his attention. These came to the fore in new ways in the following decade when van Gogh became an artist, and reading and the collecting of prints and illustrations informed both his ideals and his practical investigations of a radical, egalitarian style. After his move to France, van Gogh's earlier preoccupations were woven into his wider experience and his dramatically original late works. Van Gogh's brief participation in the cosmopolitan art scene in Paris brought him into contact with British-based painters and collectors who were some of the first to respond to his work, but its full impact came in the twentieth century. The publication focuses on the first displays of van Gogh's work before the First World War and the establishment of his reputation following the war, and then on the Second World War and its aftermath, when the artist's life and work became renowned as an embodiment of embattled human creativity. Essays by leadng experts will explore how van Gogh's work became such an inspiration to modern British artists in the twentieth century, from Sickert to Bacon.

Starry Night is a fully illustrated account of Van Gogh's time at the asylum in Saint-Remy. Despite the challenges of ill health and asylum life, Van Gogh continued to produce a series of masterpieces – cypresses, wheatfields, olive groves and sunsets. He wrote very little about the asylum in letters to his brother Theo, so this book sets out to give an impression of daily life behind the walls of the asylum of Saint-Paul-de-Mausole and looks at Van Gogh through fresh eyes, with newly discovered material.

A historical romance novel of love, artistry, and Vincent Van Gogh’s muse in 19th century France Summer, 1890. Van Gogh arrives at Auvers-sur-Oise, a bucolic French village that lures city artists to the country. It is here that twenty-year-old Maurguerite Gachet has grown up, attending to her father and brother ever since her mother’s death. And it is here that young Vincent Van Gogh will spend his last summer, under the care of Doctor Gachet—homeopathic doctor, dilettante painter, and collector. In these last days of his life, Van Gogh will create over 70 paintings, two of them portraits of Marguerite Gachet. But little does he know that, while capturing Marguerite and her garden on canvas, he will also capture her heart. Both a love story and historical novel, The Last Van Gogh recreates the final months of Vincent’s life—and the tragic relationship between a young girl brimming with hope and an artist teetering on despair.
