Met de komst van Alva en zijn leger in augustus 1567 brak een nieuwe fase aan in de Opstand. De heer van Weert, graaf van Horn, beter bekend als Hoorne, was een van de eerste slachtoffers van de nieuwe Raad van Beroerten. Wat gebeurde er met de heerlijkheid Weert nadat Hoorne in 1568 op de Grote Markt te Brussel was onthoofd? Jos Wassink beschrijft hoe Weert zich als onderdeel van het Spaanse, later Oostenrijkse Overkwartier van Gelre steeds meer moest schikken naar de centrale regering te Brussel en het gewestelijk bestuur te Roermond. De sterke positie van het communalisme en het feodalisme in Weert zorgde er echter voor dat de centrale overheid minder greep had op de bevolking dan elders het geval was. Totdat de Fransen in 1795 radicaal een eind maakte aan het Ancien Régime, behield Weert zijn 'status aparte' binnen het Overkwartier van Gelre. Dr. Jos Wassink (1955) studeerde geschiedenis aan de Gelderse Leergangen te Arnhem en aan de Katholieke Universiteit Nijmegen. Hij is gemeentearchivaris van Weert. De geschiedenis van rechtspraak en bestuur in Weert is het onderwerp van het proefschrift waarop hij in 2004 is gepromoveerd aan de Radboud Universiteit Nijmegen.

This study offers a new view on public services in the early modern Low Countries and answers the following questions: who provided public facilities in urban communities and in which ways did public amenities change in the period between 1500 and 1800? It throws light on the ways in which responsibilities were shared between city dwellers and the factors which influenced the allocation and reallocation of public services between the sixteenth and nineteenth centuries. The present study looks at those who provided various services to their communities, the ways in which they were rewarded and monitored, and the gain they may have sought. It focuses on the situation in the Low Countries, but in many respects, it also describes the development of the provision of public services in most towns in early modern Western Europe. The complex mixture of central and local, private and public, ecclesiastical and secular, individual and corporate initiatives, characterized – to a greater or lesser extent – urban communities everywhere in Western Europe. Above all, early modern towns were civil societies in which community services such as health care, poor relief, and public security were largely shaped and formed by conceptions of citizenship and collective interest.

Small power diplomacy in seventeenth century Europe War, State and Society in Liège is a fascinating case study of the consequences of war in the Prince-Bishopric of Liège and touches upon wider issues in early modern history, such as small power diplomacy in the seventeenth century and during the Nine Years’ War. For centuries, the small semi-independent Holy Roman Principality of Liège succeeded in preserving a non-belligerent role in European conflicts. During the Nine Years’ War (1688–1697), however, Liège’s leaders had to abolish the practice of neutrality. For the first time in its early modern history, the Prince-Bishopric had to raise a regular army, reconstruct ruined defence structures, and supply army contributions in both money and material. The issues under discussion in War, State and Society in Liège offer the reader insight into how Liège politically protected its powerful institutions and how the local elite tried to influence the interplay between domestic and external diplomatic relationships.

This work studies the Great Council of Malines as an institution. It analyzes the Council’s internal organization and staff policy, its position within the broader society of the Austrian Netherlands, the volume and nature of litigation at the Council and its final years and ultimate demise in the late 18th and early 19th century. By means of this institutional study, this volume provides insight into the role played by the Great Council in the process of state-building in the 18th century Austrian Netherlands. While superior courts were once considered to be the prime agencies of change in the Early Modern Period, tools par excellence for the sovereigns’ striving towards centralization and superiority, their position in the 18th century has so far been barely touched upon. This work focuses specifically on the 18th century supreme court of the Austrian Netherlands and provides a broad overview with attention to other aspects of the tribunal's functioning and to its role in 18th century attempts at state formation.

Was Eijsden in de uiterste zuidwesthoek van de Nederlandse provincie Limburg een stad, een dorp of geen van beide? Dat is de vraag die centraal staat in deze rechtshistorische studie naar de ontwikkeling van Eijsden in de periode 1300-1550. Op basis van rechtsregels en rechtspraktijk, in combinatie met ruimtelijke, demografische en sociaaleconomische aspecten concludeert Hans van Hall, dat Eijsden als een stadje - een Minderstadt - kan worden beschouwd. Eijsden is exemplarisch voor tal van stadjes die in de Late Middeleeuwen door diverse landsheren zijn gesticht in het politiek fel betwiste gebied aan weerskanten van de Maas. Zo verleende de prinsbisschop van Luik privileges aan Eijsden die ontleend zijn aan het stadsrecht van Luik. Het zogenaamde Vrijheidsboek legt hiervan getuigenis af. Een tekstkritische en geannoteerde editie van het Eijsdense Vrijheidsboek is daarom als losse bijlage opgenomen in deze studie.

In 1795 verdeelde het revolutionaire Frankrijk de in 1794 veroverde Zuidelijke Nederlanden in negen departementen en annexeerde deze. Nedermaas was een van deze departementen en bleef bijna twintig jaar Frans. In die periode was het hoogste gezag steeds in Franse handen, maar er waren ook duizenden lokale bestuurders die uit het gebied zelf afkomstig waren. Zij waren in het algemeen geen revolutionairen, maar mannen die het beste ervan probeerden te maken in deze tijd van turbulente veranderingen. Grootste aanstoot voor de bevolking en de bestuurders vormden de kerkvervolging, de militaire dienstplicht en de steeds toenemende belastingdruk. Een kleine elite voelde zich wel thuis in de Franse staat en wist daarvan te profiteren. Vooral in de kantons en communes was er een opmerkelijke continuïteit van lokale bestuurders, van het ancien régime via de Franse tijd tot nadat de Fransen in 1814 door de geallieerden waren verjaagd.

In de put' gaat over de dagelijkse werking van de arbeidsmarkt voor mijnwerkers in Belgisch-Limburg. In zijn onderzoek is Bart Delbroek uitgegaan van het idee van 'de arbeidsmarkt als arena', met daarin een centrale rol voor machts- en afhankelijkheidsrelaties. Die waren in het Kempense mijnbekken overduidelijk in het voordeel van de mijndirecties. Het arbeidsmarktbeleid van de mijndirecties werd gekenmerkt door een paternalistische en autoritaire visie op de arbeidsverhoudingen. Toch waren er grenzen aan hun machtspositie. Deze werden in de eerste plaats bepaald door de regulering van de arbeidsverhoudingen door de overheid. Maar de grootste hinderpaal voor de mijnmaatschappijen vormde de aard van het mijnwerkersberoep zelf. De schaarste aan arbeidskrachten leidde tot scherpe concurrentie op de arbeidsmarkt tussen de werkgevers onderling, zowel binnen Limburg als daarbuiten. Dat bood mijnwerkers de mogelijkheid om hun eigen positie te verbeteren.0.

In 1834 legde Petrus Regout, gangmaker van de Maastrichtse industrialisatie, de grondslag voor zijn imperium van glas- en aardewerkfabrieken, waaruit later NV De Sphinx is voortgekomen. Deze studie onderzoekt de sociaal-ruimtelijke effecten van de opkomst van de keramische industrie op het Boschstraatkwartier-Oost, een wijk onder de rook van de fabrieken van Regout & Co. Driekwart eeuw na vestiging van deze fabrieken was de sociaal-demografisch gemêleerde wijk een overbevolkte achterbuurt geworden, waar huisjesmelkers zich verrijkten ten koste van de pottemennekes. Kinderen groeiden er onder erbarmelijke omstandigheden op en gingen al jong bij Regout werken, in enkele gevallen zelfs na het verbod op kinderarbeid in 1874. In de jaren 1950 deden sociologen in deze ‘achterstandswijk’ onderzoek naar ‘onmaatschappelijke gezinnen’. Uit een levensloopanalyse van vijf generaties van families afkomstig uit het Boschstraatkwartier blijkt echter, dat er meer dynamiek en variatie aanwezig was dan deze sociologen veronderstelden.
