Chinatown is a neighborhood in Vancouver, British Columbia, the largest Chinatown in Canada. Centered on Pender Street, Gastown to the North, Downtown Financial and Central Business District to the West, Georgia Viaduct and False Creek Entrance to the South, Downtown Eastside and Old Japantown Relics to the Northeast, and Strathcona to the Southeast residential area. Because of Vancouver's large Chinese population -- especially Cantonese-speaking multi-generation Chinese Canadians and first-generation immigrants from Hong Kong -- the city is known as "Hongcouver." In recent years, however, most immigrants have come from Mandarin-speaking residents of mainland China. Chinatown remains a popular tourist attraction and is one of the largest historic Chinatowns in North America, but it has recently experienced decline as new members of Vancouver's Chinese community dispersed to other parts of the metropolitan area. Chinatown is known for its lively food scene, including traditional Asian bakeries, dim sum restaurants and trendy cocktail bars. Old-school pharmacists fill their shelves with canned ginseng and dried fish, while independent boutiques fill the streets with Chinese grocery stores filled with fresh seafood and exotic vegetables. The nearby Sun Yat-sen Classical Chinese Garden has peaceful paths and pavilions. This book is my street shoot in the last 6 years.

Anderson charts the construction of Chinatown in the minds and streets of the white community of Vancouver over a hundred year period. She shows that Chinatown -- from the negative stereotyping of the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries to its current status as an "ethnic neighbourhood" -- has been stamped by changing European ideologies of race and the hegemonic policies those ideas have shaped. The very existence of the district is the result of a regime of cultural domination that continues to exist today. Anderson clearly rejects the concept of "race" as a means of distinguishing between groups of human beings. She points out that because the implicit acceptance of public beliefs about race affects the types of questions asked by researchers, the issue of the ontological status of race is as critical for commentators on society as it is for scientists studying human variation. Anderson applies this fresh approach toward the concept of race to a critical examination of popular, media, and academic treatments of the Chinatown in Vancouver.

A colourful illustrated history of the buildings in Vancouver’s Chinatown, celebrating the richness, diversity, and vibrancy of the Chinese community. Buildings are more than just bricks and mortar; they are keepers of secrets and history. With more than forty vibrant illustrations, writeups on the buildings, interviews with community members, and select archival photographs, Chinatown Vancouver celebrates the invaluable contributions of the Chinese to Canada. The colourful illustrations portray Chinatown during its thriving days as a commercial hub when iconic businesses such as Cathay Importers, Ho Inn Restaurant, Ming Wo Cookware, and Ho Ho Restaurant were pillars in the community. Early Chinese settlers in Vancouver demonstrated immense resilience and perseverance in creating a self-sustaining safety net to weather racial hostility, discrimination, and segregation from broader Canadian society. The protection of cultural sites like Chinatown helps us understand our connection to place, the past, and the future. In showcasing its unique architecture, Chinatown Vancouver honours the neighbourhood as an irreplaceable living heritage site and cultural asset for all Canadians.
