Ten major ethnic groups are featured - including the San, Zulu, Ndebele, Basotho, and Venda - as well as several smaller sub-groups. This book describes the individual personality and history of each, their education, laws, languages, medicine and magic, and their religion. Over 200 photographs capture the vibrant color of ceremonial and everyday dress and ornamentation, musical instruments, dances and rites of passage, art, homes, and work. The remarkable metal neck rings and the geometrically beaded wire hoops worn by Ndebele and Ntwana women, the sacrificial ceremonies of the Zulu, the long pipes smoked by the Xhosa, and the traditional hunter-gatherer weapons of the San, deep in the Kalahari Desert - the details of today's way of life are recorded here in evocative pictures, while former traditions, now lost, fill the text with the intriguing, vital history of each group.

Skin-lightening is currently one of the most common forms of potentially harmful body modification practices in the world and African women are among some of the most widely represented users of skin-lightening products. The overall objective of this book is to provide up-to-date evidence-based recommendations for reducing the global burden of cosmetic skin bleaching and preventing injuries related to skin bleaching in sub-Saharan Africa and Africans in diaspora. The book aims to: offer an appraisal of all relevant literature on cosmetic bleaching practices to-date, focusing on any key developments; identify and address important medical, public health issues as well as historical, genetic, psychosocial, cultural, behavioural, socioeconomic, political, institutional and environmental determinants; provide guideline recommendations that would help attenuate the burden and possibly eliminate the injuries related to skin bleaching; discuss potential developments and future directions.

My Vanishing African Dreams describes my unusual and exciting life as a woman, both on our cattle ranch where we were traders in beef cattle in Kenya, and my remarkable experiences exploring Kenya’s mostly uninhabited Northern Frontier District. My story includes the mountains I’ve climbed and the dangers of those climbs, as well as treacherous experiences encountering wildlife. I was taught to fly by my father, and during our flying years, survived aircraft accidents and other unforeseen tragedies. My travels to the United States and the adventures there with friends are also included. But my story is really about the never-ending excitement and danger of everyday life in the African wilderness. Even though it is almost 2017, we still get our hot water from lighting a fire in a wood burner to heat it. We collect our rain water off the house roof, which runs along gutters into huge underground storage tanks. We are miles from a shopping centre, and need a 4x4 Land Rover to get anywhere on our dirt roads that are filled with huge potholes.

It was 1971. I had just completed a position as a junior law professor at the Ethiopian national university, I had a yearning to explore the African wilderness, the more remote and pristine, the better. I teamed up with a Dutch pal, and we trekked into the bush of Northern Kenya and Southern Ethiopia. We brushed closer to death than either of us could have imagined, finding tribal warfare, tyranny and corruption, and the perils of wild beasts that roam the African wilderness.I would not have missed it for the world!

Mirella Ricciardi is one of the greatest photographers of the African continent; she is also best known for the classic book Vanishing Africa. This highly personal account of her life in Africa from the1920s to the present day is part diary, part reminiscence, and part photographic album. She shows you the great African characters from George Adamson to Peter Beard, plus Hollywood stars, animal trainers, models and fashion photographers. However it's her greatest love--the tribal warriors and the panoramic landscapes of Africa--that take center stage here.
