They will have justice. They will show their power. They will not burn. 'Three women's fight for survival in a time of madness' Kiran Millwood Hargrave, author of The Mercies Norway, 1662. A dangerous time to be a woman, when even dancing can lead to accusations of witchcraft. After recently widowed Zigri's affair with the local merchant is discovered, she is sent to the fortress at Vardø to be tried as a witch. Zigri's daughter Ingeborg sets off into the wilderness to try to bring her mother back home. Accompanying her on this quest is Maren - herself the daughter of a witch - whose wild nature and unconquerable spirit gives Ingeborg the courage to venture into the unknown, and to risk all she has to save her family. Also captive in the fortress is Anna Rhodius, once the King of Denmark's mistress, who has been sent in disgrace to the island of Vardø. What will she do - and who will she betray - to return to her privileged life at court? These Witches of Vardø are stronger than even the King. In an age weighted against them, they refuse to be victims. They will have their justice. All they need do is show their power. 'An intricately woven, timeless novel about prejudice, misogyny, freedom and the power and strength we can find within' - Christy Lefteri, author of The Beekeeper of Aleppo 'A passionate indictment of the patriarchy ... a vibrant exaltation of the resilience of women ... Anya Bergman summons a historic witch trial with breathtaking detail and immediacy' Hannah Kent, author of Burial Rites 'Brilliant and powerful. Haunting and beautifully written. Where bloodlines converge, the past and present bleed into one. In the dim light of Vardo, Finnmark in 1663, as witches whisper spells from the shadows of their impending doom, a lone guard and a physician plot a dark course that will echo through the ages, threatening the legacy of all who come after. In "Blood Legacy," a gripping tale of dark magic and darker histories unfurls, beginning in the depths of a 17th-century witch trial in Norway. As the townspeople of Vardo call for blood to protect their purity, a hidden plot involving bloodletting unfolds—aimed to weaken the witches but not to kill. The sinister strategy harbors a deeper malice, one that intends to trace witch bloodlines through the ages. Centuries later, this ancient vendetta resurfaces, menacing the life of Tom, a young man unknowingly descended from a line of witches. As Tom grapples with the revelations of his family's past and the burden of a power he never sought, he finds himself at the heart of a battle that straddles the line between historical vendettas and the struggle for personal identity. In his fight against a legacy written in blood, Tom must confront not just his own destiny, but the moral entanglements of carrying a legacy that was never his to choose. Will he reject the darkness woven into his bloodline, or will he redefine what it means to be a descendant of witches? Blood Legacy is the third and final book in the Blood Magick Trilogy. Where ancient magic meets modern bloodlines, the fight for destiny begins. From the smoldering embers of a 17th-century witch hunt to the hallowed halls of a contemporary magical academy, Tom Callahan discovers that his inheritance is much darker and more powerful than he ever imagined. Across centuries and continents, a legacy of blood and magic beckons, forcing Tom to confront a past steeped in betrayal and a future fraught with peril. Clean YA Urban Fantasy The "Blood Magick Trilogy" weaves a tapestry of dark magic and the weight of legacy through the life of Tom Callahan, a seemingly ordinary young man with an extraordinary heritage. In "The Blood Mage," Tom is thrust into the world of magical politics and ancient secrets when he discovers his rare ability to wield Blood Magick. The shadows of history loom as he grapples with powers that could reshape reality itself. As the series unfolds with "Blood Magick," Tom delves deeper into the mystical underpinnings of his family's past, uncovering forbidden spells and alliances that span centuries. The boundary between friend and foe blurs, and Tom's struggle to control his powers draws him closer to a brink he never wished to explore. "Blood Legacy" brings the trilogy to a haunting conclusion, where Tom confronts the culmination of centuries of plots—where bloodletting rituals of old threaten to destroy the fragile balance of the present. Faced with the ultimate choice between embracing his dark inheritance or forging a new path, Tom's decisions will ripple through time, affecting magic and mundane alike. As enemies surface from the shadows of his bloodline, Tom must decide if the legacy of Blood Magick is a curse meant to be broken or a gift to be embraced. In this spellbinding finale, destinies collide, truths are unearthed, and the power of blood and magick is tested against the unyielding force of fate. The Blood Magick Trilogy is a spinoff of The Evers Series, but new readers do not need to have read the series to enjoy the books. Stay in the loop! Salem, King James VI, Malleus Maleficarum. The world of witch hunts and witch trials sounds antiquated, relics of an unenlightened and brutal age. However, 'witch hunt' is heard often in the present-day media, and the misogyny it is rooted in is all too familiar today. A woman was prosecuted under the 1735 Witchcraft Act as recently as 1944. This book uses thirteen significant trials to explore the history of witchcraft and witch hunts. As well as investigating some of the most famous trials from the middle ages to the 18th century, it takes us in new and surprising directions. It shows us how witchcraft was decriminalised in the 18th century, only to be reimagined by the 1780s Romantic radicals. We will learn how it evolved from being seen as a threat to Christianity to perceived as gendered persecution, and how trials against chieftains in Africa stoked anger against colonial rule. Significantly, the book tells the stories of the victims - women, such as Helena Scheuberin and Joan Wright - whose stories have too often been overshadowed by those of the powerful men, such as King James VI and I and “Witchfinder General” Matthew Hopkins, who hounded them. While this will be a history of witchcraft, the subject cannot be consigned to the history books. Hundreds of people, mostly women, are tried and killed as witches every year in Africa. ‘WITCH HUNT!’ is as common in our language today as ever it was, and witches are still on trial across the world.
