Uittreksel: Carnaval (ook wel 'Vastelaovend') is een van oorsprong katholiek feest, dat ook heidense wortels heeft en gevierd wordt in de drie dagen voorafgaand aan Aswoensdag. Volgens de traditie duurt het feest van zondag tot dinsdagavond - de Vastenavond. Om middernacht vangt de vastentijd aan van 40 dagen, tot Pasen. De oorsprong van het woord is onbekend. Van oudsher is carnaval een eetfestijn, omdat het de laatste mogelijkheid was zich te buiten te gaan voor de vastentijd, waarin men zich beperkte tot het minimaal noodzakelijke. Op vette dinsdag (voor de vasten) werd al het vet wat er in huis was opgemaakt omdat het anders zou bederven. De vasten is ter herdenking van de 40 dagen die Jezus volgens het Nieuwe Testament in de woestijn vastte en tevens tot bezinning op de christelijke kernwaarden. Waarschijnlijk bestond het feest al langer dan de christelijke traditie, en heeft de Kerk het gemakkelijker gevonden het heidense carnaval in een katholieke traditie om te zetten dan het uit te bannen. Dit is overigens ook met andere voorchristelijke feesten gebeurd zoals Kerstmis dat oorspronkelijk een 'heidens' midwinterfeest was. In die betekenis wordt de term afgeleid van het Latijn: carne vale (= vaarwel aan het vlees). Een andere mogelijke verklaring voor de term is het eveneens Latijnse carrus navalis: scheepswagen, hetgeen zou verwijzen naar rondtre...
