Um 1700 tauchte in Berlin ein lateinisches Gedicht auf, in dessen Titel ein Mönch des Klosters Lehnin aus dem 13. Jahrhundert als Verfasser erscheint, die Lehninsche Weissagung; sie sollte eine immense Verbreitung erfahren. Prophezeit werden u. a. das Aufkommen des Protestantismus, das Ende der Herrschaft der Hohenzollern unter ihrem elften Repräsentanten sowie die Rekatholisierung Deutschlands. Zwar wurden die Verse rasch als Erzeugnis des späten 17. Jahrhunderts erkannt, sie fanden aber immer wieder energische Verfechter ihrer Echtheit. So vermochte die Prophezeiung im religiösen und politischen Diskurs mehrerer Staaten Europas eine beträchtliche Rolle zu spielen – bis weit ins 20. Jahrhundert hinein. Die vorliegende Arbeit ist die erste, die dieser außergewöhnlichen Wirkungsgeschichte gilt. Auf den lateinischen Text, eine Übersetzung sowie Erläuterungen zu Form und kulturellem Kontext folgt die Analyse signifikanter Stationen der Rezeption: Dabei geht es um die religiöse und politische Instrumentalisierung des Lehninense unter anderem in der Revolution 1848/49, im "Kulturkampf" unter Kaiser Wilhelm II., während des Ersten Weltkriegs und unter dem Nationalsozialismus. Für die starke Wirkung, welche die Weissagung entfaltet hat, bleibt ein Wort, das Friedrich Wilhelm IV. zugeschrieben wird, bezeichnend: "Wir glauben nicht an diese Weissagung, aber wir fürchten sie." Around 1700 a Latin poem, the Lehnin Prophecy appeared in Berlin, its title indicating that the author was a 13th-century monk from the Abbey of Lehnin; it achieved an immensely wide circulation. The events it foretold included the coming of Protestantism, the end of Hohenzollern rule under its eleventh representative, and the re-catholicisation of Germany. Although the verse prophecy was soon recognised as a late-17th-century work, there were many who continued to argue energetically for its authenticity. Thus the Prophecy played a considerable role in the religious and political discourse of several European states, and continued to do so well into the 20th century. This is the first study devoted to this extraordinary influence. The full Latin text, with a translation and notes on its form and cultural context, is followed by an analysis of significant stages in its reception: this covers the religious and political instrumentalisation of the Lehnin Prophecy during periods including the revolutions of 1848-49, the ‘Kulturkampf’ under Kaiser Wilhelm II, the First World War and National Socialism. The powerful influence of the Prophecy is well summed up in the words attributed to the Prussian King Friedrich Wilhelm IV: “We do not believe in this prophecy, but we fear it.”
