This is particularly important at a time when parallel computing is undergoing strong and sustained development and experiencing real industrial take-up. Euro-Par’s objective is to become the primary choice of such professionals for the presentation of new results in their specic areas. Euro-Par is also interested in applications which demonstrate the e - tiveness of the main Euro-Par themes. There is now a permanent Web site for the series http://brahms. fmi. uni-passau. de/cl/europar where the history of the conference is described. Euro-Par is now sponsored by the Association of Computer Machinery and the International Federation of Information Processing. Euro-Par’99 The format of Euro-Par’99follows that of the past four conferences and consists of a number of topics eachindividually monitored by a committee of four. There were originally 23 topics for this year’s conference. The call for papers attracted 343 submissions of which 188 were accepted. Of the papers accepted, 4 were judged as distinguished, 111 as regular and 73 as short papers.

The papers in this volume were presented at the Sixth Workshop on Algorithms and Data Structures (WADS '99). The workshop took place August 11 - 14, 1999, in Vancouver, Canada. The workshop alternates with the Scandinavian Workshop on Algorithms Theory (SWAT), continuing the tradition of SWAT and WADS starting with SWAT'88 and WADS'89. The subject of sparse matrices has its root in such diverse fields as management science, power systems analysis, surveying, circuit theory, and structural analysis. Efficient use of sparsity is a key to solving large problems in many fields. This second edition is a complete rewrite of the first edition published 30 years ago. Much has changed since that time. Problems have grown greatly in size and complexity; nearly all examples in the first edition were of order less than 5,000 in the first edition, and are often more than a million in the second edition. Computer architectures are now much more complex, requiring new ways of adapting algorithms to parallel environments with memory hierarchies. Because the area is such an important one to all of computational science and engineering, a huge amount of research has been done in the last 30 years, some of it by the authors themselves. This new research is integrated into the text with a clear explanation of the underlying mathematics and algorithms. New research that is described includes new techniques for scaling and error control, new orderings, new combinatorial techniques for partitioning both symmetric and unsymmetric problems, and a detailed description of the multifrontal approach to solving systems that was pioneered by the research of the authors and colleagues. This includes a discussion of techniques for exploiting parallel architectures and new work for indefinite and unsymmetric systems.

This book contains the papers presented at the 9th International Workshop on Field ProgrammableLogic and Applications (FPL’99), hosted by the University of Strathclyde in Glasgow, Scotland, August 30 – September 1, 1999. FPL’99 is the ninth in the series of annual FPL workshops. The FPL’99 programme committee has been fortunate to have received a large number of high-quality papers addressing a wide range of topics. From these, 33 papers have been selected for presentation at the workshop and a further 32 papers have been accepted for the poster sessions. A total of 65 papers from 20 countries are included in this volume. FPL is a subject area that attracts researchers from both electronic engine- ing and computer science. Whether we are engaged in research into soft ha- ware or hard software seems to be primarily a question of perspective. What is unquestionable is that the interaction of groups of researchers from di?erent backgrounds results in stimulating and productive research. As we prepare for the new millennium, the premier European forum for - searchers in ?eld programmable logic remains the FPL workshop. Next year the FPL series of workshopswill celebrate its tenth anniversary.The contribution of so many overseas researchers has been a particularly attractive feature of these events, giving them a truly international perspective, while the informal and convivial atmosphere that pervades the workshops have been their hallmark. We look forward to preserving these features in the future while continuing to expand the size and quality of the events.
