Ecological Succession On Fallowed Shifting Cultivation Fields written by Claudio O. Delang and has been published by Springer Science & Business Media this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2012-12-20 with Science categories.

The book reviews the literature on the ecological succession of plants on fallowed swiddens in tropical forests. Patterns of ecological succession in tropical forests are insufficiently understood, partly because results are scattered through a large number of case studies reported in academic articles. So far, no publication has attempted to bring these different case studies together to identify common patters and trends. The goal of the book is to review the different case studies, and identify common patterns of ecological succession in fallowed swiddens, as well as to pinpoint the factors that cause ecological succession in some areas to differ from those in other areas. The book is organised in four different sections: forest structure, forest diversity, species composition, and the factors that contribute to differences in forest recovery rates (the number of times the field was burned, the length of fallow period, the type of soil, and the type of forest). This book is an important contribution to tropical forestry and shifting cultivation. Deforestation and forest degradation are the largest sources of CO2, and shifting cultivation is one of the main culprits. For this (and other economic and political) reason governments attempt to curtail shifting cultivation by shortening the years the fields can be left fallow, or outright outlawing the farming practice. Yet, there is insufficient understanding of the processes of ecological succession in fallows, which raises the questions as to whether the policy fulfils its objectives.

Biodiversity In Drylands written by Moshe Shachak and has been published by Oxford University Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2004-12-09 with Science categories.

Biodiversity in Drylands, the first internationally based synthesis volume in the Long-Term Ecological Research (LTER) Network Series, unifies the concepts of species and landscape diversity with respect to deserts. Within this framework, the book treats several emerging themes, among them: ? how animal biodiversity can be supported in deserts ? diversity's relation to habitat structure, environmental variability, and species interactions ? the relation between spatial scale and diversity ? how to use a landscape simulation model to understand diversity ? microbial contributions to biodiversity in deserts ? species diversity and ecosystem processes ? resource partitioning and biodiversity in fractal environments ? effects of grazing on biodiversity ? reconciliation ecology and the future of conservation management In the face of global change, integration is crucial for dealing with the problem of sustaining biodiversity. This book promises to be a vital resource for students, researchers, and managers interested in integrative species, resource, and landscape diversities.

This volume commemorates the Golden Jubilee Year of the establishment of Kirorimal College. This prestigious institution was honoured by the gracious presence of the First President of India, Dr. Rajindra Prasad who laid the foundation of the college building. This commemorative volume focuses attention on the growing awareness about plant ecology and environment biology. The different contributions present an up-to-date, detailed and balanced overview of the current knowledge within specific topics.Man has interacted with nature in various ways since the dawn of civilization. Primitive societies ensured that a proper balance was maintained. The situation has changed by the various developmental activities of man. We are losing our natural resources, biodiversity, genetic diversity, and are unable to manage nature. The consequences are becoming apparent in the form of drought, floods, depletion of the ozone layer, global warming, climate change, melting of snow, rising of water levels in coastal areas, desertification, etc. These concern ecologists/ environmentalists and should receive adequate attention by students who study ecology. In this volume, emphasis has been laid on areas such as Climate Change, Environmental Laws, Biodiversity Act, Intellectual Property Rights, Mineral Industry and Environment, Remote Sensing, GIS and the environment, Diversity and Distribution of wild relatives of crop plants, Sustainable agriculture, Management of Protected Areas, Wetland ecosystems, and Coastal Erosion. The volume is meant to serve as useful reference book for graduate and post-graduate students.
