Excerpt from Venetian Studies Hic vobis, aquatilium avium more, domus est. But no eye noted the first low huts, built Of mud bricks, nor measured those light and shallow boats which stood, stabled like horses, at the door Of every house; no historian traced the internal growth Of these fishing stations; and we have been left to suppose what has Often been stated, that the refugees from the mainland, flying before the frequent foreign occupations, found the islands, where they sought Shelter, deserted mud banks out at sea. This could not have been the case. Venice was not peopled solely by exiles from Aquileia, Oderzo, Concordia, or Padua. Through the Obscurity Of the records which have reached us, we can trace a long-continued struggle raging inside venice, t before a thorough fusion of the original and the immigrant populations could be brought about. There were years Of quarrelling between Malamocco, where the Older race predominated, and Heraclea. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Excerpt from In and Around Venice I have added some chapters on a few of the less known places in the neighbourhood which may be of use to those who wish to see what the mainland is like. The first chapter appeared in Venetian Studies, now out of print. It was written in 1887, and in some cases reference is made to places which no longer exist. I have let these few passages stand as records of what once was, but have noted the changes at the foot of the page. Excerpt from The Enchanted Island: The Venice of Titian, and Other Studies in Art T is not difficult to surmise how England became The Enchanted Island. The hardy fishermen pushing out from the western Shores of the great con tinent of Europe would see our white cliffs, at dawn ushed with roseate light, at night-fall glorified by the setting sun. Such a'line on the horizon - beautiful to look upon, perhaps dangerous to approach, certainly unexplored - might well be the land of which even Heine dreamed. Myth first; then History; then Religion; always the struggle going on between good and evil. Now Science with its clear eyes; and the common-place work-a-day world with its dull eyes; and Nature with eyes as of a god - a sun-god - SO bright. And over all the spell of an Enchanter's wand. That is the subject of this little book. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Excerpt from The Venetian Printing Press: An Historical Study Based Upon Documents for the Most Part Hitherto Unpublished His book consists of two parts. First, an historical study of the Venetian Printing Press from its origin down to the fall of the Republic, based, in a large degree, upon the documents which form the second part of the book. In this study I trace the history of the Venetian press from its introduction, through the sixteenth century - noting especially how press legislation grew up, preceded by custom and practice, and then formulated in law; how the government dealt with such questions as copyright, protection, and censorship; how the Guild of Printers and Booksellers was founded and governed; how the book trade came under the in uence of the Index and the Inquisitorial censorship, and how the Republic endeavoured to protect the trade, thereby involving itself in a long struggle with the Church of Rome - till we reach the slow decline of the Venetian press through the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries, in spite of the legis lation which was designed to preserve it. I have called the work a study, rather than a history of the Venetian press, because I feel that a true history of that press would require far more bibliographical knowledge than I possess. This book will have fulfilled its purpose if it serves as a pioneer along a line of research which has never been adequately explored, except at its beginning, and then almost entirely from a bibliographical, not from an historical or legal point of View. The second part of the book contains the documents which served as a basis for the study. By far the larger part are published now for the first time. In some cases I have reprinted documents which have already seen the light, because 1 know that they are difficult of access to English students. These documents fall into several groups.
