This volume explores the various strategies by which appropriate pasts were construed in scholarship, literature, art, and architecture in order to create “national”, regional, or local identities in late medieval and early modern Europe. Because authority was based on lineage, political and territorial claims were underpinned by historical arguments, either true or otherwise. Literature, scholarship, art, and architecture were pivotal media that were used to give evidence of the impressive old lineage of states, regions, or families. These claims were related not only to classical antiquity but also to other periods that were regarded as antiquities, such as the Middle Ages, especially the chivalric age. The authors of this volume analyse these intriguing early modern constructions of “antiquity” and investigate the ways in which they were applied in political, intellectual and artistic contexts in the period of 1400–1700. [Italiano]: All’interno del Parco Archeologico di Venosa, in provincia di Potenza, domina una grande croce scoperta, emblema del non-finito medievale: l’Incompiuta, parte dell’abbazia della SS. Trinità. Attraverso le vicende storiche che l’hanno vista protagonista, la presente ricerca analizza il rapporto della chiesa con la colonia romana Venusia e, successivamente, con la città medievale. Tale approccio ha consentito di conoscere il contesto storico, sociale, urbanistico e tecnologico in cui l'Incompiuta si inseriva, come basi per una attendibile lettura morfologica e architettonica del manufatto. Il rilievo dell’abbaziale mediante tecniche di fotogrammetria digitale ha fornito un modello tridimensionale dettagliato, indispensabile per la conoscenza dello stato di fatto dell'organismo architettonico, connotato da un elevato grado di fragilità. Le ipotesi ricostruttive sono state supportate e validate dal rapporto costante con il digital twin derivato dal rilievo e dalle analogie con altre chiese franco-benedettine coeve, e hanno lo scopo di valorizzare l’ambizioso progetto architettonico non ultimato. La predisposizione inoltre di contenuti digitali in realtà aumentata e realtà virtuale per la comunicazione dell’architettura e dei suoi paramenti decorativi hanno infine lo scopo di sperimentare un nuovo livello di fruizione, basato sull’immersività nelle spazialità ricostruite e sull’interazione con le forme architettoniche e scultoree attraverso gli elementi digitali immessi nello spazio fisico mediante la realtà aumentata./[English]: Within the Archaeological Park of Venosa, in the province of Potenza, an uncovered large cross dominates, symbol of the medieval unfinished: the Unfinished Church (Incompiuta), in the abbey of the Most Holy Trinity. Through the historical events that have seen it as a protagonist, this research analyses the relationship with the roman colony Venusia and, subsequently, with the medieval city. This approach made it possible to know the historical, social, urban and technological context in which the Incompiuta was inserted, as the basis for a reliable morphological and architectural reading of the building. The survey of the abbey using digital photogrammetry techniques provided a detailed three-dimensional model, essential for the knowledge of the state of the architectural organism, characterized by a high degree of fragility. The reconstructive hypotheses were supported and validated by the constant relationship with the digital twin derived from the survey and the similarities with other contemporary franco-benedictine churches, and are intended to enhance the ambitious, unfinished architectural project. Furthermore, the preparation of digital contents in augmented reality and virtual reality for the communication of architecture and its decorative vestments finally have the aim of experimenting a new level of use, based on immersion in the reconstructed spatiality and on the interaction with architectural and sculptural shapes through digital elements placed in physical space through augmented reality.

Il volume analizza il rapporto tra intellettuali e potere nelle “periferie” del Regno di Sicilia e di Napoli in età medievale e moderna. Questo "romanzo storico familiare" illustra le memorie della famiglia Cufaro della città di Venosa (Pz) nel periodo tra la seconda metà del XIX° secolo e fine XX°. Gli autori sono due cugini che si uniscono sia nell' intento di narrare la storia della loro famiglia, attraverso memorie personali e altrui reminiscenze, che in quello di ripercorrere avvenimenti sociali, culturali ed economici legati in particolare alle città di Venosa e di Melfi. Nella narrazione entrano in scena personalità forti, come la figura del nonno, il veterinario Nicola Cufaro, del quale entrambi portano il nome, e attraverso i racconti legati agli antenati ci si imbatte in figure di spicco del tessuto sociale della Basilicata dell'epoca. Grazie, infatti, alla pratica ingegneristica del bisnonno, Ing. Michele Mancini, e all'impegno politico di suo cugino, l'onorevole Floriano Del Zio, alla fine dell'800 si realizzò la "ferrovia Lucana", una delle più importanti infrastrutture della Basilicata, ancora oggi in uso. La stesura di "Casa Cufaro" rappresenta per gli autori un luogo dove riemergono ricordi, immagini e si scoprono fatti ed eventi rimasti sconosciuti anche ai parenti più stretti. Con queste pagine si sorpassa la storia di una famiglia per giungere ad un messaggio limpido: la memoria dimora nella storia e nelle forti emozioni che ne nascono, rendendola vivida e senza tempo.

[Italiano]: La signoria feudale del Mezzogiorno e nel Mezzogiorno è un tema storiografico di lunga durata, che in anni recenti ha ripreso nuova linfa. Il ripensamento delle categorie interpretative del fenomeno signorile basso-medievale, una serie di approfondite analisi delle società rurali tardo-medievali e dei caratteri dei poteri feudali, le circostanziate ricostruzioni delle loro forme di amministrazione e di gestione, le indagini sulla semantica delle rappresentazioni e sul loro grado di pervasività hanno consentito il superamento di quel paradigma storiografico di una feudalità regnicola omogenea al proprio interno e monolitica nei suoi orientamenti. Inserendosi in questo dibattito, il volume propone un caso di studio: la signoria degli Orsini di Nola tra la Terra di Lavoro e il Principato Ultra (1293-1528). Attraverso l’esame di una varietà di fonti (documentarie, narrative, iconografiche e architettoniche), con particolare attenzione al secondo Quattrocento, l’Autore riflette sulle forme del radicamento del potere orsiniano, sui suoi rapporti con le élites della contea, sui processi di autorappresentazione. In tal modo egli offre un rilevante contributo allo studio dei signori e delle corti signorili nel Regno di Sicilia./[English]: The feudal lordship of Southern Italy and in Southern Italy is a long-lasting historiographic theme, which has taken on new life in recent years. The rethinking of the interpretative categories of the medieval lordship, a series of in-depth analyses of the late-medieval rural societies and the characteristics of the feudal powers, the detailed reconstructions of their forms of administration and management, the investigations into the semantics of representations have allowed the overcoming of that historiographic paradigm of a Southern baronial class which was internally homogeneous and monolithic in its orientations. Aiming to follow this path, this book puts a case study forth: the lordship of the Orsini, counts of Nola, between Terra di Lavoro and Principato Ultra (1293-1528). Using a wide variety of sources (documentary, literary, iconographic and architectural), the author reconstructs how the Orsini were able to entrench themselves within this territory, exposing their network of relationships with Nola’s most prominent families, and analysing the processes of their self-representation through artistic patronage.
