European venture capital (VC) funds have historically underperformed their US counterparts. This has resulted in reduced investment into European VC by the traditional institutional investors. This book investigates the factors that give rise to the performance difference. It is based on the author’s research at the Adam Smith Business School, University of Glasgow which involved a qualitative study of some 64 VC firms in the UK, continental Europe and the US, supplemented by 40 interviews with other stakeholders, including limited partner investors, corporate venturers, entrepreneurs and advisors. Readers will gain an in-depth understanding of the various structural, operational and wider environmental factors that impact on the performance difference between UK/European and US VC funds. The study is unique in that it provides, for the first time, a holistic and extensive analysis of the entire investment process from sourcing deals to exiting deals specifically contrasting Europe and the US in terms of the variables pertaining to the investment process and the impact on the fund performance. Factors impacting on the performance differential are structural, resulting from characteristics of the funds themselves, operational such as the investment practices of the VC firms which manage the funds and environmental such as culture and attitude to risk and the wider ecosystem in which the funds operate. These factors are set out clearly for the reader. The characteristics of the better performing funds in Europe and the US are also investigated. The book is aimed at academics who are researching venture capital fund performance and investment practices and also at practitioners, advisors and policymakers who want to learn about best VC investment practices. Whilst the book is focused on European and US VC investing, the best practices are also pertinent for VC firms and funds setting up in other geographies, particularly in emerging markets. To this end, best practice guidelines based on the research are included.

Für die Volkswirtschaften haben Innovationen vor allem eine Bedeutung bezüglich der Schaffung neuer Arbeitsplätze und der Generierung von Wohlstand. Oftmals ist es in diesem Kontext jedoch eine Vielzahl kleiner Unternehmen, welche für den Fortbestand kontinuierlicher Innovationen entscheidend sind. Deshalb ist die Finanzierung dieser Unternehmen von immenser Wichtigkeit. Das Finanzierungssystem, welches aus dieser Problematik entstanden ist, wird als Venture Capital (VC) bezeichnet. VC löst die Probleme, welche insbesondere Unternehmen in der Frühphase bezüglich ihres Finanzbedarfes haben. Somit ist durch eine VC-Finanzierung der Grundstein für ein langfristiges Wachstum junger Unternehmen gelegt. So wurden einige namenhafte Firmen, wie z.B. Apple, Intel, Microsoft und Cisco Systems, während ihrer Frühphase mit VC finanziert. Diese Arbeit beschäftigt sich in Kapitel 2 mit der Begriffsabgrenzung des VC zum Private Equity. Darüber hinaus wird in Kapitel 3 die Frühphase und in Kapitel 4 die Spätphase der Unternehmung auf dem deutschen Markt näher beleuchtet. Hierbei rückt jedoch die Frühphase der Unternehmung in den Vordergrund der Betrachtungen. Im Anschluss erfolgt in Kapitel 5 eine Performancemessung des VC. Hierzu wird neben dem deutschen Markt auch noch der amerikanische Markt bezüglich der Performance betrachtet. Ziel der Arbeit ist es den Entwicklungsstand und das Potential des deutschen VC-Marktes darzustellen.

Master's Thesis from the year 2021 in the subject Business economics - Investment and Finance, grade: 8.1/10, TiasNimbas Business School, course: Investment Management, language: English, abstract: The purpose of this study is to examine the performance of publicly traded Venture capital indices. As these indices have become available to the public in 2012, allowing investors globally to gain exposure to the Venture Capital asset class. It is of note that the indices were conceived in 1996 but only became available to the public in 2012. This raises the question if these Index funds are able to provide attractive returns or even beat the market. In order to answer this question archival price datasets have been extracted for VC indices, various benchmark indices and analyzed using the Sharpe ratio and Jensen’s alpha. The data extracted covers a 25 year time frame from 1995-2021 and is extracted in both monthly and annual time intervals. Using this approach the research finds that one of the VC indices exceeds market risk adjusted returns in terms of the Sharpe ratio and Jensen’s alpha in net and gross returns. This finding contradicts the academic theory and should not be possible. The other VC index show significant underperformance using both measures. To conclude it is not possible to make any general statements using the present sample In regard to VC index performance. Therefore it is suggested that further empirical research is conducted using a larger sample of VC indices, while the outperformance of the TRVCINX is also investigated as it stands in contrast to the academic literature.
