In seiner langen Geschichte schwankte seine Macht und Stabilität sowohl innen- als auch außenpolitisch.Mehrmals in der Geschichte dieses Weltreiches waren es einzelne Persönlichkeiten, welche das Schicksal ihrer Zeitgenossen bestimmten. Dabei gab es verschiedene Arten, wie dies geschehen konnte. Neben Kriegen gegen andere Völker und Reiche, zwangen auch innere Konflikte, wie Aufstände und Bürgerkriege, der jeweiligen Zeit ihren Stempel auf. Der Erfolg war dabei freilich ebenso verschieden, wie jene Charaktere, die als Hauptakteure der Konflikte auftraten. Großen Eroberungen nach allen Himmelsrichtungen hin standen in der römischen Geschichte auch katastrophale militärische Niederlagen entgegen. Ähnlich erscheint es bei den innenpolitischen Kämpfen. Neben den Erfolgen eines Sulla oder Julius Cäsar verblassen heute in der breiten Öffentlichkeit zu Unrecht jene Aufständischen, die mit ihrer Rebellion keinen Erfolg hatten.Einer von diesen ist Lucius Sergius Catilina. Seine Erhebung fand 63 v. Chr. statt und endete mit seinem Tod im darauf folgenden Jahr. Catilinas Umsturzversuch befindet sich zeitlich somit zwischen jenem von Sulla und Cäsar und damit in einer äußerst brisanten Zeit der späten Römischen Republik. Trotz ihres Scheiterns hatte die Verschwörung für viele Zeitgenossen sowie für die weitere Geschichte der Römischen Republik große Bedeutung. Auch zeigt sich an den späteren Triumphen Cäsars, dass ein Aufstand zur damaligen Zeit durchaus Erfolgschancen hatte.Die Verschwörung ist uns heute vor allem aus zwei zeitgenössischen Quellen bekannt. Zum einen aus den vier "Catilinarischen Reden"1 des Cicero, welche er parallel zu den Ereignissen rund um die Rebellion im Senat bzw. vor dem Volk in Rom hielt.2 Zum anderen aus der Monographie "Die Verschwörung Catilinas"3 von Sallust. Dieses Werk, zwei Jahrzehnte nach den Ereignissen entstanden, erläutert den Verlauf der Verschwörung sowie weitere Hintergründe. Cicero und Sallust stellen bicht nur die wichtigsten zeitgenössischen Quellen für die Verschwörung des Catilina dar, sondern die wohl wichtigsten überhaupt. Umso interessanter sind ihre Eigenheiten, mit welchen sie die Verschwörung des Catilina schildern.

This division or "vertical split" appears in a person at odds with himself, a person who puzzles over, and even heartily dislikes, that parallel person who behaves in so repugnant a manner. In Being of Two Minds, Arnold Goldberg provides trenchant insight into such divided minds - their origins, their appearances, and their treatment. Goldberg's inquiry into divided minds leads to a return to the psychoanalytic concept of disavowal, which forms the basis of the vertical split. Goldberg explores the developmental circumstances that tend to a reliance on disavowal, provides numerous examples of the emergence of disavowal in the treatment situation, and considers the therapeutic approaches through which disavowal may be addressed. He is especially perceptive in discussing the manner in which the therapist's own tendency to disavow may collusively interact with that of the patient. Goldberg considers the full range of splits to which disavowal gives rise, from circumscribed instances of dissociation to the much-debated multiple personality disorders. He gives special attention to the role of the vertical split in patients with behavior disorders; here his thoughtful insights point to a treatment approach that significantly differs both from the simple ascription of a 'self disorder' and from the usual pedagogical emphasis on issues of self-control and/or punishment. As Goldberg shows, the repugnance felt by many therapists for offensive behaviors emanating from the patient's parallel self are frequently shared by the patient, who commonly despises misbehavior that he is unable to understand. Being of Two Minds begins to formulate just such understanding, to the great benefit of patient and therapist alike.

The contributors to the present volume approach World War I and World War II as complex and intertwined crossroads leading to the definition of the new European (and world) reality, and deeply pervading the making of the twentieth century. These scholars belong to different yet complementary areas of research – history, literature, cinema, art history; they come from various national realities and discuss questions related to Italy, Britain, Germany, Poland, Spain, at times introducing a comparison between European and North American memories of the two World War experiences.
