Theodosius Ii written by Christopher Kelly and has been published by Cambridge University Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2013-08-08 with History categories.

Theodosius II (AD 408–450) was the longest reigning Roman emperor. Ever since Edward Gibbon, he has been dismissed as mediocre and ineffectual. Yet Theodosius ruled an empire which retained its integrity while the West was broken up by barbarian invasions. This book explores Theodosius' challenges and successes. Ten essays by leading scholars of late antiquity provide important new insights into the court at Constantinople, the literary and cultural vitality of the reign, and the presentation of imperial piety and power. Much attention has been directed towards the changes promoted by Constantine at the beginning of the fourth century; much less to their crystallisation under Theodosius II. This volume explores the working out of new conceptions of the Roman Empire - its history, its rulers and its God. A substantial introduction offers a new framework for thinking afresh about the long transition from the classical world to Byzantium.

New York Martutene written by Joseba Gabilondo and has been published by this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2016-12-31 with categories.

he present book is a critical essay on Basque literature, history, and globali-zation, which takes Ramon Saizarbitoria's novel Martutene (2012) as a starting point. Martutene, a small Basque town, in which the action of the novel takes place, becomes the setting where the protagonists deal with the consequences of North American globalization, which are mirrored by another small town in New York. Hence the title of the book: New York - Martutene. Unlike the previous most important novel of the new millennium, Kirmen Uribe's Bilbao - New York - Bilbao (2008), which idealizes globalization, Saizarbirtoria's criticizes it, hence the global emphasis of his novel: the Basque town of Martutene. Ramon Saizarbitoria's Martutene (2012) is the most important novel in the his-tory of Basque literature and, thus, is bound to become the central reference of the Basque literary canon. The novel provides a new perspective to examine recent Basque history: the long Basque 20th century (1898-2012), which is inaugurated by Sabino Arana's nationalism (1898), becomes defined by the Spanish Civil War (1936-1939) and ETA's armed conflict (1968-2011), and is concluded by the crisis of neoliberalism (2008- ). In his novel, Saizarbitoria painfully retraces the history of that century, masterfully sketching the central role played by the "culture of the loser" in Basque society. He does so by using the anthropological mirror of an outsider: a North American woman visiting the Basque Country, whose name, Lynn, coincides with that of the protagonist of a similar earlier reflection, Marx Frisch's Montauk (1975). Moreover, Saizarbitoria offers, in his novel, a postna-tional utopia to understand and live the newly inaugurated 21st century, even though he does so by presenting the radiography of a decadent Basque bour-geoisie anchored in the already departed 20th century. Although this class is not able to survive the advances of neoliberal globalization, its failure, ironically enough, points to a Basque utopia beyond the limits set by that very same globalization. Therefore, the literary space opened between Martutene, a town in the Basque Country, and Montauk, a similar town in New York, near the center of globalization, offers a new Basque perspective on history, culture, and globalization.
