New York Martutene written by Joseba Gabilondo and has been published by this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2016-12-31 with categories.

he present book is a critical essay on Basque literature, history, and globali-zation, which takes Ramon Saizarbitoria's novel Martutene (2012) as a starting point. Martutene, a small Basque town, in which the action of the novel takes place, becomes the setting where the protagonists deal with the consequences of North American globalization, which are mirrored by another small town in New York. Hence the title of the book: New York - Martutene. Unlike the previous most important novel of the new millennium, Kirmen Uribe's Bilbao - New York - Bilbao (2008), which idealizes globalization, Saizarbirtoria's criticizes it, hence the global emphasis of his novel: the Basque town of Martutene. Ramon Saizarbitoria's Martutene (2012) is the most important novel in the his-tory of Basque literature and, thus, is bound to become the central reference of the Basque literary canon. The novel provides a new perspective to examine recent Basque history: the long Basque 20th century (1898-2012), which is inaugurated by Sabino Arana's nationalism (1898), becomes defined by the Spanish Civil War (1936-1939) and ETA's armed conflict (1968-2011), and is concluded by the crisis of neoliberalism (2008- ). In his novel, Saizarbitoria painfully retraces the history of that century, masterfully sketching the central role played by the "culture of the loser" in Basque society. He does so by using the anthropological mirror of an outsider: a North American woman visiting the Basque Country, whose name, Lynn, coincides with that of the protagonist of a similar earlier reflection, Marx Frisch's Montauk (1975). Moreover, Saizarbitoria offers, in his novel, a postna-tional utopia to understand and live the newly inaugurated 21st century, even though he does so by presenting the radiography of a decadent Basque bour-geoisie anchored in the already departed 20th century. Although this class is not able to survive the advances of neoliberal globalization, its failure, ironically enough, points to a Basque utopia beyond the limits set by that very same globalization. Therefore, the literary space opened between Martutene, a town in the Basque Country, and Montauk, a similar town in New York, near the center of globalization, offers a new Basque perspective on history, culture, and globalization.

This book—aimed at both the general reader and the specialist—offers a transatlantic, transnational, and multidisciplinary cartography of the rapidly expanding intellectual field of Galician Studies. In the twenty-one essays that comprise the volume, leading scholars based in the United States, Canada, the United Kingdom, and New Zealand engage with this field from the perspectives of queer theory, Atlantic and diasporic thought, political ecology, hydropoetics, theories of space, trauma and memory studies, exile, national/postnational approaches, linguistic ideologies, ethnographic poetry and photography, Galician language in the US academic curriculum, the politics of children’s books, film and visual studies, the interrelation of painting and literature, and material culture. Structured around five organizational categories (Frames, Routes, Readings, Teachings, and Visualities), and adopting a pluricentric view of Galicia as an analytical subject of study, the book brings cutting-edge debates in Galician Studies to a broad international readership.

Before Babel: A History of Basque Literatures is the first book written originally in English and directed towards a global audience. It is also a new departure from traditional literary histories, as it is not a philological tedious classification of centuries, authors, genres, and books published in Basque. This book addresses the historical conflict and violence that define Basque history and culture, and so it defines Basque literary history as that of at least two literatures: one expressed by Basque subaltern (oppressed) classes in their language, euskara, which mainly constitutes an oral tradition, and the other written by Basque elites in Spanish, Latin, French, etc. The book emphasizes that this double literature remains at the core of the Basque Country’s history and culture to our days. Even today Basque literature in euskara (Basque language) plays a symbolic role: to represent a Basque Country where the majority speaks and writes in other state languages. Euskara, used by a minority, remains subordinate. In this respect, this book is a departure from previous Basque literary histories; it redefines Spanish and French literatures, advances a new theory of what a minority literature is, and pays attention to texts, disciplines, and practices that traditional histories neglect: political discourse, anthropology, tourism, economics. This history also represents a review of most literary historical discourses (new historicism, postcolonial theory, multiculturalism, subaltern studies) and presents a new methodological and theoretical proposal. Finally, this history allows to revisit under a new light political and historical movements such as nationalism, feminism, modernity, and globalization. As a result, different authors such as Sabino Arana, Judah Halevi, Maddalen Lujambio, Axular, Hugo, Unamuno, Itxaro Borda or Oteiza are brought together.

Cyclone, Revolution, Corkscrew; Luna Park, Pleasure Beach, Dreamland – names and places instantly familiar to rollercoaster and amusement park enthusiasts. But what first gave rise to the concept and nomenclature of the amusement park; how did amusement parks develop in Britain and elsewhere, and what fate awaits historic amusement parks and their rides today? This thought-provoking and timely book brings together leading writers from a variety of disciplines to explore the social history and cultural heritage of the amusement park. Rooted in the British experience but informed by extensive international coverage, it provides a thematic, comparative exploration of the origins, development, decline and significance of the amusement park. The rich set of case studies presented comment on the interrelationships between history, culture and heritage, challenging traditional academic boundaries while offering important contributions to policy-making and regeneration initiatives. The book provides new insights into a neglected aspect of popular culture and will be a valuable resource to students and scholars of history, heritage, tourism, leisure, technology and design.
