Warum halfen Menschen untergetauchten Juden im Nationalsozialismus? Zur Beantwortung dieser Frage hat die Forschung bislang in erster Linie auf die Persönlichkeiten der Helfer geachtet. Diese Studie erweitert diese Perspektive und untersucht 5.000 Hilfsleistungen zwischen 1.400 Helfern und Hilfsempfängern mit Rückgriff auf Methoden der Sozialen Netzwerkforschung und liefert durch die enge Verbindung von Hermeneutik und Datenanalyse auch einen Beitrag zur Methodendiskussion in den Digitalen Geisteswissenschaften. Hilfsnetzwerke hatten ihre Wurzeln in Vertrauensbeziehungen, die in Nischen überleben konnten. Oftmals in Reaktion auf die Judenverfolgung und vorangetrieben durch charismatische Persönlichkeiten, entwickelte sich über Jahre hinweg die Bereitschaft, das hohe Risiko von Hilfsleistungen einzugehen. Den Verfolgten kommt dabei eine bislang unterschätzte Bedeutung als Impulsgeber, Vermittler und Helfer zu. Anhand von sechs Berliner Fallstudien untersucht Düring aus der Perspektive von Helfern und Hilfsempfängern die soziale Verfasstheit von Hilfsbereitschaft.

This volume considers the uses and misuses of the memory of assistance given to Jews during the Holocaust, deliberated in local, national, and transnational contexts. History of this aid has drawn the attention of scholars and the general public alike. Stories of heroic citizens who hid and rescued Jewish men, women, and children have been adapted into books, films, plays, public commemorations, and museum exhibitions. Yet, emphasis on the uplifting narratives often obscures the history of violence and complicity with Nazi policies of persecution and mass murder. Each of the ten essays in this interdisciplinary collection is dedicated to a different country: Belarus, Denmark, France, Germany, Greece, North Macedonia, the Netherlands, Poland, Slovakia, and Ukraine. The case studies provide new insights into what has emerged as one of the most prominent and visible trends in recent Holocaust memory and memory politics. While many of the essays focus on recent developments, they also shed light on the evolution of this phenomenon since 1945.

This collective volume explores the ways merchants managed to connect different spaces all over the globe in the early modern period by organizing the movement of goods, capital, information and cultural objects between different commercial maritime systems in the Mediterranean and Atlantic basin. Merchants and Trade Networks in the Atlantic and the Mediterranean, 1550-1800 consists of four thematic blocs: theoretical considerations, the social composition of networks, connected spaces, networks between formal and informal exchange, as well as possible failures of ties.
