Historians have often either ignored Anacharsis Cloots (1755-1794) or considered him deranged because he claimed to be the 'orator of the human race' and devised a 'universal republic' based on the 'sovereignty of the human race'. This book is the first comprehensive study of the entire body of Cloots's written works and political actions. By contextualizing them, the book non only rehabilitates Cloots as a political thinker worthy of consideration, but also argues that his political thought constitutes a specific branch of republicanism in the age of Atlantic revolutions: cosmopolitan republicanism. The introduction suggests how 18th-century French cosmopolitanism was a new philosophical tradition, but was composed of several themes, which the book then analyses in Cloots's writings. The first chapter provides a brief overview of his life. The second chapter explains why he called himself orator and wrote pamphlets, and why contemporary readers should not discard this as non-philosophical. Having established Cloots's writings as constituting a philosophical system, the following chapters explores it through the themes laid out in the introduction. First, the concept of reason and his understanding of science. Second, the paradigm of natural law and the role of nature in moral and political thought. Third, the conception of humanity and individuals in nature and society. Finally, republicanism and its principles. The last chapter summarizes the elements of Cloots's cosmopolitan republicanism and opens a research programme to other political thinkers in the age of Atlantic revolutions for historians and political theorists.

This study examines how the British Empire of the 18th century contained revolution by integrating opposition agents as new spaces of power opened up. Across the world the Western dominated international aid system is being challenged. The rise of right-wing populism, de-globalisation, the advance of illiberal democracy and the emergence of non-Western donors onto the international stage are cutting right to the heart of the entrenched neoliberal aid paradigm. Foreign Aid in the Age of Populism explores the impact of these challenges on development aid, arguing that there is a need to bring politics back into development aid; not just the politics of economics, but power relations internally in aid organisations, in recipient nations, and between donor and recipient. In particular, the book examines how aid agencies are using Political Economy Analysis (PEA) to inform their decision making and to push aid projects through, whilst failing to engage meaningfully with wider politics. The book provides an in-depth critical analysis of the Washington Consensus model of political economy analysis, contrasting it with the emerging Beijing Consensus, and suggesting that PEA has to be recast in order to accommodate new and emerging paradigms. Im Zuge der karolingischen Eroberungen des 8. Jahrhunderts in Italien sowie der Erschließung jener Regionen etwa kamen sicher viele Menschen nach Italien, von denen einige geistliche oder weltliche Ämter erhielten oder in unterschiedlichen Formen einen neuen Lebensmittelpunkt fanden. Die verfügbaren Quellen zu diesen Prozessen sind nun mit verschiedenen qualitativen und quantitativen Methoden neu ausgewertet worden, darunter eine migrationssoziologisch ausgerichtete Prosopographie der italischen Eliten, Urkundenstatistik und Analyse der Landübertragungen zwischen Landbesitzenden der Lucchesia und dem Bistum von Lucca oder eine Verbindung aus Historischer Mikrosemantik und Corpuslinguistik. In den Sozialverhältnissen vor Ort, so zeigt sich, interagierten Personen unterschiedlicher Herkunft auf ganz verschiedene Weise, ethnische Zuordnungen und auch die Migration selbst erweisen sich dabei jedoch als nachrangig gegenüber der Einbindung in Herrschaftszusammenhänge und der lokalen Dynamik der Sozialverhältnisse.
