Excerpt from Vergil und die Epische Kunst Ich habe mich nun bemüht, die Methode der Erklärung zu vervollkommnen und wo möglich dasjenige Mafs von Objektivität darin zu erreichen, welches gegenüber der Sub jektivität dichterischer Werke überhaupt und eines augustei schen Dichters insbesondere erreichbar scheint. Mit dieser Methode habe ich einige umfangreichere und wichtigere Ab schnitte der Aeneide einer Prüfung und Auslegung unter worfen. Die Auslegung bezog sich zunächst auf Form und Inhalt des dichterischen Einzelausdrucks: es wurde Wort um Wort, Satz um Satz so voraussetzungslos als moglich auf die dichterische Bedeutung untersucht. Es wurde sodann der Zusammenhang der Sätze formal und inhaltlich in der selben Richtung gepruft; dann weiter Absatz für Absatz, zuletzt der ganze Abschnitt in Bezug auf Kompositionsform und dichterische Idee behandelt. Kein altuberliefertes Urteil uber Vergil und kein angebliches Gesetz epischer Kunst wurde unbesehen angenommen. Dagegen wurde die alte Ueberlieferung des d104es nach Wortlaut und Reihenfolge solang als richtig vorausgesetzt, bis das Gegenteil wirklich bewiesen schien. Stets wurden Leben und Erlebnisse in der Zeit des Dichters beobachtet, nicht um einzelne historische °hindeutungen' oder allegorische °anspielungen' zu ent decken, sondern um uber den allgemeinen natürlichen Grund der poetischen Stimmungen und den allgemeinen natürlichen Urstoff der epischen Ideen klar zu werden.
