Angesichts der Tatsache, dass die Anzahl dokumentierter Stressfolgeerscheinungen stetig im Wachsen begriffen ist, stellt sich die Frage nach Kompensationsstrategien, die der Notwendigkeit von Psycho- und Pharmakotherapie vorbeugen. Entspannungsverfahren haben sich in der Vergangenheit als wirksamer Bestandteil solcher Strategien erwiesen. Durch ihre Anwendung kann eine Entspannungsreaktion induziert werden, welche das physiologische Gegenstück der Stressreaktion darstellt. Gerd Schnack hat in 2012 ein Verfahren vorgeschlagen, welches die zentrale Rolle des Nervus vagus innerhalb dieses Geschehens betont, und die Stimulation vagaler Aktivität beabsichtigt. Ziel dieser Studie war es, die Wirksamkeit der Vagusmeditation nach Schnack zu evaluieren. Hierzu wurde sie anhand psychologischer und physiologischer Messergebnisse mit der Progressiven Muskelrelaxation nach Jacobson verglichen. Im Ergebnis wurden durch beide Verfahren signifikante Mittelwertsänderungen erzielt, die Effektstärke der Vagusmeditation war jedoch durchgehend ausgeprägter.
