Cultural Memory And Historical Consciousness In The German Speaking World Since 1500 written by Christian Emden and has been published by Peter Lang this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2004 with History categories.

This is the first of three volumes based on papers given at the conference 'The Fragile Tradition: The German Cultural Imagination Since 1500' in Cambridge, 2002. Together they provide a conspectus of current research on the cultural, historical and literary imagination of the German-speaking world across the whole of the modern period. This volume highlights the ways in which cultural memory and historical consciousness have been shaped by experiences of discontinuity, focusing particularly on the reception of the Reformation, the literary and ideological heritage of the Enlightenment, and the representation of war, the Holocaust, and the reunification of Germany in contemporary literature and museum culture.

The Word Biblical Commentary delivers the best in biblical scholarship, from the leading scholars of our day who share a commitment to Scripture as divine revelation. This series emphasizes a thorough analysis of textual, linguistic, structural, and theological evidence. The result is judicious and balanced insight into the meanings of the text in the framework of biblical theology. These widely acclaimed commentaries serve as exceptional resources for the professional theologian and instructor, the seminary or university student, the working minister, and everyone concerned with building theological understanding from a solid base of biblical scholarship. Overview of Commentary Organization Introduction—covers issues pertaining to the whole book, including context, date, authorship, composition, interpretive issues, purpose, and theology. Each section of the commentary includes: Pericope Bibliography—a helpful resource containing the most important works that pertain to each particular pericope. Translation—the author’s own translation of the biblical text, reflecting the end result of exegesis and attending to Hebrew and Greek idiomatic usage of words, phrases, and tenses, yet in reasonably good English. Notes—the author’s notes to the translation that address any textual variants, grammatical forms, syntactical constructions, basic meanings of words, and problems of translation. Form/Structure/Setting—a discussion of redaction, genre, sources, and tradition as they concern the origin of the pericope, its canonical form, and its relation to the biblical and extra-biblical contexts in order to illuminate the structure and character of the pericope. Rhetorical or compositional features important to understanding the passage are also introduced here. Comment—verse-by-verse interpretation of the text and dialogue with other interpreters, engaging with current opinion and scholarly research. Explanation—brings together all the results of the discussion in previous sections to expose the meaning and intention of the text at several levels: (1) within the context of the book itself; (2) its meaning in the OT or NT; (3) its place in the entire canon; (4) theological relevance to broader OT or NT issues. General Bibliography—occurring at the end of each volume, this extensive bibliographycontains all sources used anywhere in the commentary.

Narrative Ironies written by Gerald Gillespie and has been published by BRILL this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2023-04-12 with History categories.

This volume focuses on the flourishing of irony as a primary characteristic of the great era of European narrative sophistication from the Goethezeit to Modernism. Its eighteenth essays explore varieties of ironic consciousness associated with texts especially of northern Europe, and the ways they established a dialogue with and on literature and culture at large. As the volume shows, this interrogation of Europe's self-awareness of cultural identity bound up in reading and writing habits gained a new post-Cervantine complexity in Romanticism and has been of lasting significance for literary theory down to postmodernism. By its comparativistic framing of the issues raised by ironic consciousness, Narrative Ironies duly serves as a Festschrift honoring Lilian R. Furst. Among major writers treated are Sterne, Goethe, Godwin, Schlegel, Hoffmann, Poe, Stendhal, Kierkegaard, Disraeli, Keller, Maupassant, Zola, Huysmans, Wilde, Tolstoi, Hofmannsthal, Strindberg, Proust, Mann, Musil, Kafka, Joyce, Faulkner, and Szczypiorski.

Gottfried Keller And His Critics written by Richard R. Ruppel and has been published by Camden House this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 1998 with Literary Criticism categories.

Survey of the criticism devoted to Gottfried Keller, the important nineteenth-century writer in German. The works of Gottfried Keller (1819-1890) rank alongside those of Goethe and Thomas Mann, yet this volume is the first in any language to examine the critical assessment and scholarly expertise devoted to him, ranging from the early stages of journalistic criticism to the present day. Professor Ruppel begins by exploring the literary industry in the nineteenth century, the literary market place, the tastes of the reading public, and the expectations of editors, before going on to survey representative journalistic assessments of Keller's writing, including critical correspondence from Keller's contemporaries. Subsequent chapters examine in chronological order the most important milestones in Keller scholarship, particularly twentieth-century criticism and the Anglo-American tradition. There is also a brief history of the translations of Keller's works into English, investigating some of the difficulties confronting English translators of Keller's poetically creative German. The study concludes with an overview of recent scholarly assessments covering the past twenty-five years.
