Vermeer Faith In Painting written by Daniel Arasse and has been published by this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 1996 with Art categories.

Through a historical analysis of Vermeer's method of production and a close reading of his art, Daniel Arasse explores the originality of this artist in the context of seventeenth-century Dutch painting. Arguing that Vermeer was not a painter in the conventional, commercial sense of his Dutch colleagues, Arasse suggests that his confrontation with painting represented a very personal and ambitious effort to define a new pictorial practice within the classical tradition of his art. By examining Vermeer's approach to image-making, the author finds that his works demonstrate the concept of painting as a medium through which the viewer senses the ungraspable and mysterious presence of life. Not only does this concept of painting carry on the traditions of Classical Antiquity and the High Renaissance, but it also relates to Catholic ideas about spiritual meditation and the power of images. Arasse shows that although Vermeer usually uses secular subject matter commonplace among his contemporaries, his treatment of iconography, light, and line, for example, varies greatly from theirs. Iconographical elements tend to hold meaning in suspense rather than to explicate; dazzling light emanates from interior objects; sfumato renders the presence of objects without depicting them. Discussing these and other aspects of Vermeer's art, Arasse locates the painter's genius in the reflexive, meditative nature of his works, each of which seems to be a painting about painting.

Little is known about the personality of Johannes Vermeer, one of the most famous Dutch painters of the 17th century. We do know that he married the Catholic Catharina Bolnes, whose family was closely associated with the Jesuit community in Delft.00In this book, Gregor J.M. Weber, head of visual arts at the Rijksmuseum, shows that Vermeer himself actually pursued a Catholic lifestyle. The relationship between the artistic ambitions of the young Vermeer and his Catholic surroundings is also discussed. Vermeer's unique treatment of light, perception and perspective is examined and linked to the Jesuits' special interest in the camera obscura, the instrument of light and vision par excellence. With his research, Weber places Vermeer's person and art in a new context, which until now has only been touched upon in passing.

Vermeer's art can be understood as a synthesis of Dutch life and taste, a visual rendering of its plainness and scrupulous order, but, on the other hand--as the historian Huizinga adds--"these are not women of the year sixteen hundred such and such, but figures from an elegiac dream-world of utter peace and tranquillity."

-- The intelligent and accessible text and the reproductions of all Vermeer's surviving paintings in color make this the ideal introduction to Vermeer's work Johannes Vermeer is one of the most subtle artists who ever lived, and yet his pictures have achieved the recognition they deserve only in the 20th century. Second only to Rembrandt among 17th century Dutch painters, he enjoyed nothing like the same fame in his own lifetime. The rediscovery of Vermeer is a story in itself, which John Nash unravels in a critical journey, showing how, by dint of comparisons, cross-references and intelligent guesswork, Vermeer's paintings can be made to yield some of their secrets. Eminently readable with all Vermeer's surviving paintings reproduced in full color, this is an accessible and intelligent account of this important and popular artist.

"Vermeer: Portraits of A Lifetime" is a revolutionary reexamination of the mystique and mythology surrounding the 17th Century Dutch Master painter, Johannes Vermeer. For the first time in over 300 years names of people who posed for his paintings are identified. An unknown portrait of Vermeer, painted by his friend, Gerard ter Borch, is exposed. This book is an empathetic retrospective, built on observations that reveal answers to dozens of speculations about his paintings, his wife, his daughters, and contemporaries who were the subjects of his art, and with whom he shared his brief life in Delft. The PDF version of this book includes full color plates of each of the remaining works of Vermeer. The paperback version contains black and white plates of each of his paintings.Researched and written by Lawrence R. Spencer, author and master oil painter who, without training, "remembered" how to paint at the age of 30.

Vermeer's record of the tasks and duties of women The 35 paintings that have come down to us from the hand of Jan Vermeer (1632-1675) place him beside Rembrandt and Frans Hals as one of the great masters of the golden age of Dutch art. Most of his pictures (all of which are reproduced in this book) show women about their daily business. Vermeer records the tasks and duties of women, the imperatives of virtue under which their lives were lived, and the dreams that provided the substance of their contrasting counter-world. About the Series: Each book in TASCHEN's Basic Art series features: a detailed chronological summary of the life and oeuvre of the artist, covering his or her cultural and historical importance a concise biography approximately 100 illustrations with explanatory captions
