In this masterful work of historical scholarship, Zeev Sternhell, an internationally renowned Israeli political scientist and historian, presents a controversial new view of the fall of democracy and the rise of radical nationalism in the twentieth century. Sternhell locates their origins in the eighteenth century with the advent of the Anti-Enlightenment, far earlier than most historians. The thinkers belonging to the Anti-Enlightenment (a movement originally identified by Friederich Nietzsche) represent a perspective that is antirational and that rejects the principles of natural law and the rights of man. Sternhell asserts that the Anti-Enlightenment was a development separate from the Enlightenment and sees the two traditions as evolving parallel to one another over time. He contends that J. G. Herder and Edmund Burke are among the real founders of the Anti-Enlightenment and shows how that school undermined the very foundations of modern liberalism, finally contributing to the development of fascism that culminated in the European catastrophes of the twentieth century.

La gestation pour autrui fait aujourd’hui l’objet de débats au sein de la société ainsi que devant les juridictions appelées à se prononcer sur la filiation d’enfants conçus de cette modalité d’engendrement, qu’elle soit effectuée en Belgique ou à l’étranger. Un débat législatif pourrait avoir lieu dans un avenir plus ou moins proche en Belgique. Plusieurs propositions de loi ont en effet été déposées devant les assemblées parlementaires belges. Au-delà de la question de savoir s’il convient de l’interdire ou de l’autoriser sous certaines conditions, cette nouvelle pratique – et son éventuel encadrement législatif – méritent d’être discutés au sein de la communauté scientifique, médicale et plus largement civile, afin que différents points de vue et avis puissent être exprimés. C’est dans cette perspective que s’inscrit le présent ouvrage, qui constitue le fruit et l’actualisation d’une journée d’études organisée par le Centre de droit médical et biomédical et le Centre de droit de la personne, de la famille et de son patrimoine de l’Université catholique de Louvain. Il fait d’abord le point sur les problématiques que suscite la maternité de substitution du point de vue médical, anthropologique, philosophique, éthique et psychologique. This book argues that the defeat of the main French Centre Right party in the 2017 presidential and legislative elections, and its subsequent disintegration, were the result of a failure to respond effectively to the challenges posed by a continuing realignment of the party system. By the start of the Hollande presidency, many sections of the electorate had lost faith in the traditional parties of government and the ideologies which they represented and were adopting a more individualist approach to politics. The Left/Right divide, which had determined relations between parties since the creation of the Fifth Republic in 1958, gave way to a new arrangement, based on three axes – identity, liberal economics and Europe. These policy areas would provoke major differences of opinion among supporters of the Centre Right, and lead a significant number of them to abandon Les Républicains, which was a major factor in the election of Emmanuel Macron.
