This volume focuses on how travel writing contributed to cultural and intellectual exchange in and between the Dutch- and German-speaking regions from the 1790s to the twentieth-century interwar period. Drawing on a hitherto largely overlooked body of travelers whose work ranges across what is now Germany and Austria, the Netherlands and Dutch-speaking Belgium, the Dutch East Indies and Suriname, the contributors highlight the interrelations between the regional and the global and the role alterity plays in both spheres. They therefore offer a transnational and transcultural perspective on the ways in which the foreign was mediated to audiences back home. By combining a narrative perspective on travel writing with a socio-historically contextualized approach, essays emphasize the importance of textuality in travel literature as well as the self-positioning of such accounts in their individual historical and political environments. The first sustained analysis to focus specifically on these neighboring cultural and linguistic areas, this collection demonstrates how topographies of knowledge were forged across these regions by an astonishingly diverse range of travelling individuals from professional scholars and writers to art dealers, soldiers, (female) explorers, and scientific collectors. The contributors address cultural, aesthetic, political, and gendered aspects of travel writing, drawing productively on other disciplines and areas of scholarly research that encompass German Studies, Low Countries Studies, comparative literature, aesthetics, the history of science, literary geography, and the history of publishing.

Deze studie waarop Stan Meuwese in maart 2017 in Tilburg promoveerde, is opmerkelijk genoeg de eerste en enige wetenschappelijke juridische studie over de dienstplicht. De ontwikkeling van de wetgeving en de rechtspraak vanaf de invoering van de dienstplicht in Nederland in februari 1811 door Napoleon tot aan de opkomst van de laatste dienstplichtigen in januari 1996 komt aan de orde. Tien chronologische hoofdstukken bevatten ieder vier paragrafen: de dienstplicht (hoe komt men in de krijgsmacht terecht), de discipline (hoe houdt men met behulp van het militair straf- en tuchtrecht de dienstplichtigen vast in de kazernes), de dienstweigering (hoe bleef men uit het leger) en desertie (hoe ontvluchtte men aan de krijgsmacht). De juridische legitimatie van de dienstplicht heeft in de loop van twee eeuwen steeds ontbroken. Arm of rijk, jongen of meisje, uit een groot gezin of uit een klein gezin, leek of priester: de rechtsgeschiedenis van de dienstplicht toont geen beeld van gelijke behandeling. De dienstplicht is in 1996 niet afgeschaft, maar opgeschort. Toch zal de formele dienstplicht ook op meisjes van toepassing verklaard worden. De rechtsgeschiedenis van de dienstplicht is ook het verhaal van mensen: Dirk Donker Curtius die in 1813 werd opgeroepen voor de Garde d'Honneur van Napoleon, J.K. van der Veer, die in Middelburg in 1896 de schutterijplicht weigerde gebaseerd op antimilitaristische motieven in de lijn van Tolstoi, Herman Groenendaal die in 1921 als dienstweigeraar in hongerstaking ging, sergeant Meijer die op 12 mei 1940 werd geëxecuteerd wegens verlaten van zijn post op de Grebbeberg, Poncke Princen, die in Indië in 1948 kant van de nationalisten koos, Rinus Wehrmann die in 1971 weigerde zijn lange haren te laten knippen, Hans Dona en Wim Schul die in 1971 op grond van een artikel in een VVDM-blad drie maanden tuchtklasse in Nieuwersluis kregen, Kees Vellekoop die in 1973 op grond van politieke bezwaren tegen de krijgsmacht in de gevangenis kwam. De toekomst van de dienstplicht ligt achter ons: het is mooi geweest met de dienstplicht.

This volume contains nine essays on aspects of the Modern Devotion and its influence. Six studies deal with the spiritual development of important representatives of this late medieval church reform movement: Geert Grote, founder of the movement (two contributions), Jan Brinckerinck, Gerard Zerbolt van Zutphen (two contributions) and Alijt Bake, a female mystic who is not widely known outside the Low Countries. The three remaining studies bear upon the nunnery 'Sanct-Agnetenhuus' in Kampen, the devotion to Liduina, the 'Virgin of Schiedam', from the Middle Ages until the present day and a fifteenth-century ars moriendi here for the first time edited with full commentary. The collection has been edited by staff members of the Titus Brandsma Institute in Nijmegen. The study of the spirituality and history of the Modern Devotion is one of the key topics of interest in this Institute. An innovative analysis of aspects of Thomas a Kempis's De imitatione Christi is currently one of the focal points of the Institute's research. In 2003 Gerardi Magni Opera omnia, vol. Satire is clearly one of today’s most controversial socio-cultural topics.
