Il dibattito sulla casa oggi, specialmente nelle grandi città e nelle aree metropolitane, è molto forte. Non passa giorno che sui giornali, specie nelle cronache locali, non appaiano notizie di qualche emergenza e di qualche ipotesi o proposta di soluzione. Ora nella realtà del nostro paese la questione abitazione riguarda tra il 10 e il 15 per cento della popolazione. Ed è proprio per il fatto di riguardare soltanto una minoranza di quelle dimensioni, che il problema non assume un rilievo urgente, nell'agenda delle forze politiche. Ora anche se la stragrande maggioranza della popolazione italiana dispone di un alloggio in proprietà, esistono dei buoni e validi motivi per ridare forza a una politica dell'abitazione che nell'arco di trent'anni portò certamente a esiti positivi. Si tratta di agire sia con l'alloggio sociale, per famiglie a reddito molto basso, ma anche in favore del ceto medio, che oggi si trova in difficoltà in numerosi casi, proprio con riferimento al problema dell'abitazione. La casa è un problema per le giovani coppie, è un problema per studenti fuori sede, è un problema per la mobilità professionale, è un problema per separati e divorziati, è un problema particolare per gli immigrati. Da alti esponenti della Chiesa o del mondo civile sono stati lanciati appelli perché il problema venga affrontato. Molto spesso ci si limita a ripetere simili appelli senza giungere a indicazioni operative. D'altra parte molti pensano che la questione riguardi la classe politica, gli amministratori, e quindi esima dall'impegnarsi per individuare i punti deboli del sistema, e per elaborare proposte di soluzione, da presentare a tutti i soggetti che possono giocare una parte. L'impegno di Vincenzo Guerrieri e Andrea Villani in questo volume è di elaborare una proposta completa, che parte da una analisi della situazione, e individua i punti di debolezza del sistema, ma anche le potenzialità presenti nella molteplicità delle istituzioni pubbliche e private, individuali e collettive, che già operano in questo campo. Per risolvere il problema dell'abitazione è necessario che i Comuni mettano a disposizione le aree fabbricabili; che queste - in proprietà o in diritto di superficie - siano disponibili a basso prezzo; che i realizzatori - società immobiliari o cooperative e loro consorzi - costruiscano gli alloggi con tecnologie avanzate e al costo minimo; che coloro che ottengono gli alloggi, sia nelle strutture private che in quelle collettive, imparino a usarli come cittadini; che si realizzino realtà comunitarie; che le Regioni sostengano i Comuni in termini di servizi sociali, per l'accoglienza e per l'integrazione dei nuovi cittadini.

This book explores the issues of transformation phenomena of the urban dimension (regionalization processes) that traditional scientific literature fails to describe appropriately. So far, scholars have adopted a widespread dominant perspective that proved unable to grasp the essence of post-modern complexities that urban spaces imply. The book provides a taxonomy, in order to describe the rules of these new and peculiar cities, by using the living dimension as a device for the epistemological breaking down of traditional socio-spatial analyses. After a thorough theoretical introduction, it describes two Sicilian case studies that prove particularly relevant to the construction of a new, alternative urban regionalization theory. These two areas, Palermo and South-Eastern Sicily, are described through several aspects, such as the role of migrants and migrations in defining urban regionalization, the power of fiction and the new urban forms that are slowly emerging in Sicily. Overall, this book provides a refreshing view of what Sicily has been and is becoming, by deconstructing most of its clichés and suggesting theoretical perspectives grounded in both quantitative and qualitative analyses.

An examination of the influential Italian architectural historian Manfredo Tafuri's historical construction of contemporary architecture. The influential Italian architectural historian Manfredo Tafuri (1935–1994) invoked the productive possibilities of crisis, writing that history is a "project of crisis" (progetto di crisi). In this entry in the Writing Architecture series, Marco Biraghi explores Tafuri's multifaceted and often knotty oeuvre, using the historian's concept of a project of crisis as a lens through which to examine his historical construction of contemporary architecture. Mindful of Tafuri's statement that there is no such thing as criticism, only history, Biraghi carefully maps the influences on Tafuri's writing—Walter Benjamin, Karl Krauss, Massimo Cacciari, and the architect Ludovico Quaroni, among others—in order to create a portrait of one of the most complex minds in twentieth-century architecture and architectural history. Tracing an arc from Tafuri's first articles in the magazine Contropiano to the idea of contradiction at the center of the project of crisis, Biraghi cites Tafuri's writing on some of his contemporaries, including Louis Kahn, Le Corbusier, Robert Venturi, Aldo Rossi, and the "Five Architects" (Peter Eisenman, Michael Graves, Charles Gwathmey, John Hejduk, and Richard Meier). Tafuri's historical construction of the contemporary, Biraghi explains, is based on the idea that the past is open, providing the present with ever-changing and indeterminate form. There is no contradiction between Tafuri the historian and Tafuri the contemporary critic, only the greatest possible integration.
