In 1890, the great Cuban revolutionary leader Jose Marti wrote his most famous poetry, Versos Sencillos, in a small town called Haines Falls in the Catskill Mountains of New York. This dual-language edition of Versos Sencillos offers both the Spanish-language original and a graceful English translation of each poem in the collection. The translation follows the original rhyme scheme where feasible but deliberately chooses meaning over form, staying true to mood and method. In addition to notes on the poems, this edition also includes the particulars of translation and provides a background for the composition of the verses, features lacking in earlier translations. Probablemente la extraordinaria espontaneidad de este libro haya hecho de Versos sencillos la obra más célebre de José Martí. Unas poesías en arte menor y rima consonante, escrita en cuartetas y redondillas de clara vocación popular. Los poemas reunidos en este libro, «escritos como jugando», se inspiran en los paisajes, la música y el pueblo de Cuba. Y como Martí indica, no solo en el título mismo de este poemario, sino también en la «Dedicatoria»: «Se imprimen estos versos porque el afecto con que los acogieron, en una noche de poesía y amistad, algunas almas buenas, los ha hecho ya públicos. Y porque amo la sencillez, y creo en la necesidad de poner el sentimiento en formas llanas y sinceras.» Versos sencillos se publicó en 1891, cuatro años antes de la muerte de Martí, supone la culminación de su esplendor literario. Su obra partió del Romanticismo, se desarrolló con las primeras creaciones modernistas y ya, al final de su vida, se decantó hacia las formas sencillas y populares. José Martí, es además uno de los fundadores del pensamiento moderno latinoamericano. Fue asimismo inspirador de poetas como Rubén Darío o Juan Ramón Jiménez.

En octubre de 1891 aparece publicado en New York "Versos Sencillos" del poeta cubano José Martí; éste libro puede considerarse la obra de plenitud de su autor: el poeta tiene ya treinta y ocho años y una vasta experiencia no sólo en el campo intelectual sino también en la lucha emancipadora de Cuba.Con el poemario Martí logra una limpieza de estilo que venía buscando en sus poemas, ésta limpieza se debe en lo fundamental, a la sencillez, en entregar al lector todo lo que siente sin recato y a la limpieza en la palabra. Estos versos "sencillos", mientras más transparentes parecen, más oscuros, y más simples, mientras más profundos; son como dice el propio Martí: "la necesidad de poner el sentimiento en formas llanas y sinceras". Esta poesía, no obstante su espontaneidad, no es aquella que fluía libre, sin ataduras ni tropiezos; es una poesía pensada, sentida, reposada, que reafirmó su estatura de poeta mayor.
