Psychoanalyse en verstandelijke beperking vormen een allesbehalve vanzelfsprekend koppel. Ze lijken mekaar zelfs uit te sluiten. Aan die wederzijdse uitsluiting liggen heel wat verschillende theoretische en praktische factoren ten grondslag met ondermeer de van oudsher ambivalente verhouding van pedagogiek en psychoanalyse, het centraal staan van cognitieve processen en leertheoretische concepten in de pedagogiek, de verstandelijke handicap als een organisch gegeven dat niet voor behandeling – zeker niet voor een psychoanalytische behandeling – vatbaar is enz. Zo zijn vragen aan de orde over sensitieve responsiviteit, structuur bieden, ruimte laten en mildheid. Er zijn ook vragen gericht op de begeleider; hierin worden parallellen onderzocht tussen de beleving van de begeleiders en die van cliënten/ouders. MENTEMO heeft als doel reflectie en dialoog over de eigen praktijk te ondersteunen.
