This book explores the contemporary nature of Max Weber's work by looking in detail at his key concepts of rationalization and disenchantment. Thematic parallels are drawn between Weber's rationalization thesis and the critiques of contemporary culture developed by Jean-Francois Lyotard, Michel Foucault and Jean Baudrillard. It is suggested that these three 'postmoden' thinkers develop and respond to Weber's analysis of modernity by pursuing radical strategies of affirmation and re-enchantment. Examining the work of these three key thinkers in this way casts new light both on postmodern theory and on Weber's sociology of rationalization.

The Spirit Vs The Souls written by Christopher McAuley and has been published by this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2019 with Political sociology categories.

Despite the extensive scholarship on Max Weber (1864-1920) and W. E. B. Du Bois (1868-1963), very little of it examines the contact between the two founding figures of Western sociology. Drawing on their correspondence from 1904 to 1906, and comparing the sociological work that they produced during this period and afterward, The Spirit vs. the Souls: Max Weber, W. E. B. Du Bois, and the Politics of Scholarship examines for the first time the ideas that Weber and Du Bois shared on topics such as sociological investigation, race, empire, unfree labor, capitalism, and socialism. What emerges from this examination is that their ideas on these matters clashed far more than they converged, contrary to the tone of their letters and to the interpretations of the few scholars who have commented on the correspondence between Weber and Du Bois. Christopher McAuley provides close readings of key texts by the two scholars, including Weber's The Protestant Ethic and the Spirit of Capitalism and Du Bois's The Souls of Black Folk, to demonstrate their different views on a number of issues, including the economic benefits of unfree labor in capitalism. The book addresses the distinctly different treatment of the two figures's political sympathies in past scholarship, especially that which discredits some of Du Bois's openly antiracist academic work while failing to consider the markedly imperialist-serving content of some of Weber's. McAuley argues for the acknowledgment and demarginalization of Du Bois's contributions to the scholarly world that academics have generally accorded to Weber. This book will interest students and scholars of black studies, history, and sociology for whom Du Bois and Weber are central figures.

This work, first published in 1990, reissues the first thorough examination of the essentially masculine nature of Max Weber's social and political thinking. Through a detailed examination of his central texts, the author demonstrates Weber's masculine reading of 'social life' and shows how his work advocates a masculine form of life that poses a challenge to contemporary women and to feminism. In particular, she addresses the patriarchal implications of Weber's belief in the need to relegate the ethic of brotherly love to a private sphere in order to make possible rational action and the achievement of greatness in the public sphere.

This book explores thematic parallels between Max Weber's theory of the rationalization and disenchantment of the modern work and the critiques of contemporary culture developed by Lyotard, Foucault and Baudrillard. It is suggested that these three theorists, associated with poststructuralism and postmodernism, respond to Weber's account of the rise, nature and trajectory of modern culture by pursuing highly imaginative and coherent strategies of affirmation and re-enchantment.; Examining the work of these three key thinkers in this way casts new light on Weber's sociology of rationalization and his theory of the crisis of modernity. It also specifies the nature of transgressive critiques of modern culture and their strengths and weaknesses.

Max Weber S Sociology Of Intellectuals written by Ahmad Sadri and has been published by Oxford University Press, USA this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 1992 with Intellectuals categories.

The social role of intellectuals was a pervasive motif in Max Weber's thought, particularly in his works on religion and politics. In his study of world religions, Weber asked such questions as: What is the relation of ideas to social reality? Do the carriers of new ideas create them independently or do they reflect class or other stratum bound traditions? Comprehensively examining and extending Weber's work on the subject, Ahmad Sadri provides a new perspective on intellectuals and the intelligentsia and their respective roles in society. He also provides a synthetic typology of intellectuals which spans both Eastern and Western traditions. Sadri provides a provocative and convincing defense of an heuristic approach to theory as well. The work is further augmented with five appendices discussing such issues as: Weber on the "Positivist-Intuitionist" controversy; Winch, Schutz, and Oakes on the verification of ideal types; Weber and Islam; ideologies and counter-ideologies of intellectuals; and methodology and epistemology. Many attempts have been made by scholars to explain the roles and functions of intellectuals and intelligentsia, each remaining embedded in their commitments to various ideologies. In this work, Sadri synthesizes a review of writers from Europe, as well as Russia and the United States. He also presents a paradigm that focuses on the characteristics that distinguish intellectuals from the intelligentsia.

Max Weber And The Dispute Over Reason And Value written by Stephen P. Turner and has been published by Routledge this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2014-04-04 with Social Science categories.

The problem of the nature of values and the relation between values and rationality is one of the defining issues of twentieth-century thought and Max Weber was one of the defining figures in the debate. In this book, Turner and Factor consider the development of the dispute over Max Weber's contribution to this discourse, by showing how Weber's views have been used, revised and adapted in new contexts. The story of the dispute is itself fascinating, for it cuts across the major political and intellectual currents of the twentieth century, from positivism, pragmatism and value-free social science, through the philosophy of Jaspers and Heidegger, to Critical Theory and the revival of Natural Right and Natural Law. As Weber's ideas were imported to Britain and America, they found new formulations and new adherents and critics and became absorbed into different traditions and new issues. This book was first published in 1984.
